Note:

For more information on how to use the Beehive Mobile Client on your Windows Pocket PC or Windows Smartphone, refer to Using Beehive Mobile Client Help.

Customize your Synchronization

You can customize different aspects of your Oracle Beehive user experience such as:

Modifying the Default Date Range

When you synchronize your mobile device, events and tasks outside the server-defined, device-specific date range are not sent to the device by default. You can override this behavior by modifying your device settings.

To modify the default date range for your mobile device:

Append /dr(-<Days-Past>,<Days-Future>) to the Calendar URI on your mobile device, where <Days-Past> is the number of days in the past, and <Days-Future> is the number of days in the future.

Examples:

  • ./Calendar?/dr(-7,14): Synchronizes events and tasks seven days in the past to 14 days in the future.

  • ./Calendar/Events?/dr(-30,60): Synchronizes events 30 days in the past to 60 days in the future.

  • ./Calendar/Tasks?/dr(0,7): Synchronizes tasks from today to seven days in the future.

Deleting Items Outside the Date Range

Whenever you synchronize your mobile device, any events or tasks outside the specified date range of your device are archived on the server and deleted from the device by default. You can override this behavior by modifying your device settings.

To control whether or not items outside your specified date range are deleted from your mobile device during synchronization:

Append /deloutofrange(<X>) to the Calendar URI on your device. Entering FALSE for <X> retains items outside your date range on your mobile device. Entering TRUE for <X> deletes items outside your date range from your mobile device. You can have different settings for events and tasks.

Examples:

  • ./Calendar/Tasks?/dr(-30,60)/deloutofrange(false): Synchronizes tasks 30 days in the past to 60 days in the future, but retains tasks outside this date range on your device.

  • ./Calendar/Events?/dr(-30,60)/deloutofrange(true): Synchronizes events 30 days in the past to 60 days in the future, and deletes events outside this date range from your device.

Transferring Declined Events to Your Mobile Device

By default, Oracle Beehive does not transfer declined events to your mobile device during synchronization. However, you may want to view declined events on your device in case you decide to attend an event that you have previously declined.

To transfer declined events to your mobile device:

Append /refusedentries(<X>) to the Calendar URI on your device. Entering TRUE for <X> synchronizes all events, including declined events, on your mobile device. Entering FALSE for <X> synchronizes only accepted events and unconfirmed events on your mobile device.

Examples:

  • ./Calendar?/refusedentries(true): Synchronizes all events (including declined events) and tasks.

  • ./Calendar?/dr(-7,14)/refusedentries(true): Synchronizes all events (including declined events) and tasks seven days in the past and 14 days in the future.

  • ./Calendar/Events?/refusedentries(false): Synchronizes only accepted events and unconfirmed events.

Synchronizing only Specific Categories of Contacts on Your Mobile Device

When you use Contacts synchronization, by default all contacts are synchronized. However, sometimes you may want to synchronize only contacts in a specific category. Most mobile devices can set a Category for each of the contacts, thus grouping certain contacts together.

Oracle Beehive Server also supports modifying your contacts on the Server to be attached to a specific category (or in no specific category). You can specify only certain categories to be synchronized, which can be done for performance or for clarity.

Note:

This feature works for all available synchronization types (but applies to the Contacts data store only). The default synchronization category is all contacts including those without a category.

To create a category to be synchronized on your mobile device:

  1. Create a new category (for example, private) containing only the contacts you want to synchronize on your mobile device.

  2. Configure your device to synchronize only private contacts. (Refer to the configuration and synchronization steps on this page appropriate for your device.)

  3. Change the contacts datastore URI from contacts to the format:

    contacts?/category(categoryname)

where categoryname would be private in this example.

To change the category name to be synchronized for your mobile device:

  1. Append:

    /category(private)

to the Contacts URI on your device, where private is the name of category.

  2. Optionally, you can specify more than one category, separated with commas.

    Examples:

    • ./Contacts?/category(Business): Synchronizes only contacts have the Business category specified.

    • ./Contacts?/category(Work, Home): Synchronizes only contacts which have either Home or Work categories specified.

  2. Enter your user name and password, and sign in.

  3. Click Mobile Devices.

  4. Enter the phone number of your mobile device, including the country code, and click Add. Oracle Beehive will send a Short Message Service (SMS) message to your mobile device. Click the URL provided within the SMS message to complete the registration.

    Note:

If your device fails to receive the SMS message, you will need to manually access the mobile device User Preferences page from your mobile browser using: http://<Your-Server-Name>:<Port-Number>/mobiledm/ or https://<Your-Server-Name>:<Port-Number>/mobiledm/.

Enabling SMS Notifications

Short Message Service (SMS) is a communications protocol allowing the interchange of short text messages between mobile telephone devices.

To enable SMS notifications for your mobile device:

  1. From your desktop, access the Oracle Beehive User Preferences page. Typically, the URL will follow this structure:

    http://<Your-Server-Name>:<Port-Number>/uss/ or https://<Your-Server-Name>:<Port-Number>/uss/

  2. Enter your user name and password, and sign in.

  3. Click Mobile Devices.

  4. Before you can receive SMS notifications, you must register your mobile device. To add your mobile device to the My Devices list, enter the phone number of your mobile device, including the country code, and click Add. Alternatively, if your mobile device is already on the My Devices list, select Edit from the Actions column.

  5. Select the Enable SMS notifications on this device check box to send yourself SMS reminders for meetings you are planning to attend.

    Note:

By default, Oracle Beehive only sends reminders as SMS messages when you enable this option. Non-reminder notifications are sent to your inbox. To have non-reminder notifications sent as SMS, use the options on the Oracle Beehive User Preferences page. To access Beehive User Preferences, refer to Beehive Central Help.

  6. If your device can receive Smart Messages, select the This device supports Smart Messages check box. Smart Messaging is a method of splitting a message into multiple SMS parts (depending on length) so that it can then be recombined and received on a mobile device as one message. Selecting this option on a Smart Message-enabled device prevents receiving multiple messages from a single notification.

    Note:

If you receive blank messages after selecting the Smart Messages option, then your device does not support smart messaging, and the option should be turned off.

  7. Optionally, edit the name of your mobile device.

  8. Select Save.

Troubleshooting and Limitations

This section contains the following troubleshooting topics and limitations related to specific mobile devices, features, and functionality:

For issues related to your Windows Mobile device, refer to the Using Beehive Mobile Client Help page, in the sections Troubleshooting and Limitations, and Known Issues.

Why doesn't my Sony Ericsson Java Platform device adjust my calendar for Daylight Savings time?

Sony Ericsson Java Platform devices do not correctly adjust for Daylight Savings time changes and changes between time zones. As a result, time-based data, such as meeting times, may differ by one hour after you change your clock to or from Daylight Savings time, or after you travel to a new time zone. To avoid this limitation, you should delete all calendar entries prior to a time change and fully refresh your device after the change, as described by the following procedure.

Note:

The steps described in the following procedure may differ slightly depending on the model name and number of your Sony Ericsson device.

To ensure that your Sony Ericsson device displays the correct time and time-based data, complete the following steps:

  1. Prior to a Daylight Savings time change or traveling to a new time zone, synchronize your mobile device.

  2. From the Organizer menu on your device, select Calendar, then Advanced, and then Delete All.

  3. Select Yes to confirm. This will delete all calendar data from your device and force a full synchronization the next time you synchronize.

  4. After the Daylight Savings clock change occurs, or after you enter a new time zone, check that the time on the device is correct. If it is not, set the correct time.

  5. Synchronize your device.

  6. If you are traveling, repeat this procedure prior to returning to your original time zone or before you leave for another time zone.

Why doesn't my Sony Ericsson W580i (JP7) device show alphabetic characters in phone numbers?

The Sony Ericsson W580i (JP7) mobile device does not support alphabetic characters in phone numbers. For example, the phone number 1800SAFEWAY is not supported. This is a known device limitation.

This limitation is relevant to Oracle Beehive in cases where users enter alphabetic characters in phone numbers through their desktop clients, such as for contacts in Oracle Beehive Extensions for Outlook, and subsequently synchronize their Sony Ericsson W580i (JP7) devices. In these cases, any alphabetic characters in phone numbers will not synchronize to the mobile devices and only numeric characters will appear. For example, if a user enters 1800SAFEWAY in an Oracle Beehive client and synchronizes to the Sony Ericsson W580i (JP7) device, only 1800 will appear on the device.

I'm using another SSL Port setting. Why won't Oracle Beehive provision my Sony Ericsson [or Nokia] device?

Oracle Beehive cannot provision Nokia and Sony Ericsson devices if the SSL ports for the IMAP (port 993) and SMTP (port 465) services are non-standard, that is, if the SSL ports for these services are different than the expected default settings.

To resolve this issue on Nokia devices, complete the following steps:

  1. Configure the device's IMAP setting by navigating through the following menu options: Mailbox>Options>E-mail settings>Connection Settings>Incoming E-mail>Security (Ports).

In the Security (Ports) screen, select SSL/TLS and enter the number of the non-standard port for your deployment.

  2. Configure the device's SMTP setting by navigating through the following menu options: Mailbox>Options>E-mail settings>Connection Settings>Outgoing E-mail>Security (Ports).

In the Security (Ports) screen, select SSL/TLS and enter the number of the non-standard port for your deployment.

To resolve this issue on Sony Ericsson devices, complete the following steps:

  1. Configure the device's IMAP setting by navigating through the following menu options: Messaging>Email>Settings>Account Settings>Beehive>More>Edit Account.

In the Edit Account screen, scroll down to Encryption and select Incoming Server. In the Incoming Server screen, select SSL and enter the number of the non-standard port for your deployment.

  2. Configure the device's SMTP setting by navigating through the following menu options: Messaging>Email>Settings>Account Settings>Beehive>More>Edit Account.

In the Edit Account screen, scroll down to Encryption and select Outgoing Server. In the Outgoing Server screen, select SSL and enter the number of the non-standard port for your deployment.

Known Issues

This section contains the following known issues related to specific mobile devices, synchronization services, features, and functionality:

Duplicate Contacts May Result from Synchronizing Address Book on Palm OS Device After Full Restore

Bugs 8343563 and 8343547. When Palm OS device users perform a restore from their Palm desktop then perform a slow synchronization to the Beehive Server, some duplicate contacts (only those without a last name) may appear.

This occurs from the restore process appending the label unnamed in place of a last name in entries on the Beehive server that are blank. Thus, the matching algorithm fails, resulting in duplicate entries. Normally, no synchronization issues should occur between the Beehive server and performing restores from the Palm desktop. As a workaround, duplicates may need to be removed using the duplicate entries removal feature on your Palm OS device.

Mobile Data Sync Service May Convert an All-Day Meeting to a Day Event in Sony Ericsson Devices

Bug 6414080. When synchronized with Sony Ericsson Symbian devices, the Mobile Data Sync Service may convert an All-Day meeting that to a Day event. All-day meetings have a start time of 12:00 a.m. on one day and an end time of 12:00 a.m. on the following day.

Mobile Data Sync Service May Incorrectly Synchronize Events to Sony Ericsson Devices

Bug 6413555. When an event has previously been synchronized with Oracle Beehive using the Mobile Data Sync Service, and is subsequently modified on Oracle Beehive, if a slow synchronization is performed, the event will no longer appear on the Sony Ericsson device.

Mobile Data Sync Service Does Not Synchronize Day Event Reminders to Oracle Beehive

Bug 6367501 and 6315167. The Mobile Data Sync Service does not synchronize reminders on Day events created on mobile devices. If a reminder exists on a Day event created on the device, the reminder will be lost after synchronization.

Synchronization Limited to One-Way on Nokia 40 Series Mobile Devices

Bug 6912769. Currently, Nokia 40 Series phones deployed with Oracle Beehive only support one-way synchronization (from server to device). Two-way synchronization cannot presently be supported as the Nokia OMA-DS client begins to falsely report modifications after repeated use.
