10g database logo Data Warehouses:
How Does Yours Compare?
Here's how to find out!
Have you ever wondered:
  • Where can I find trend and comparison information to help me plan for future growth of my data warehouse?
  • How many cpu's do other customers use per terabyte? How many partitions are typically used in large tables? How many indexes? How much memory for buffer cache? Which initialization parameters are most frequently used at what values?
  • How many Oracle data warehouses run on RAC? On single nodes? Is there a trend one way or the other, especially with as data volumes increase? With newer releases?
  • How does my warehouse compare to others of similar and larger scale?

Oracle development is seeking to provide answers to all of these questions and more.

We are providing a set of scripts which gather technical information from the data warehouse, such as the init.ora settings, the overall database size, the sizes of the largest tables and indexes, which database features are being used, the OS version and settings, and other information. These scripts only gather information about the database and do not retrieve any records from data warehouse tables. We are asking data warehouse customers to provide technical information about their environments to help:

  • Oracle development to understand better which features our customers use the most and help develop best practices guidance for customers
  • Customers benchmark their environments compared to other customers' environments
Oracle development will be writing a report to summarize the key findings, and every customer who submits a script output will receive a copy of that report.

FAQs
Q: Where should the script results be sent?
A: Please ftp the output files to Oracle as described in the README file of the scripts set.
Q: What will the information be used for?
A: The information gathered will be used to:
  • Produce a report from Oracle development which summarizes the trends and findings of large Oracle data warehouses. This report will be ongoing and track trends both now and over time.
  • Assist development in our creation of more best-practices for Oracle data warehousing
  • Assist development to understand better which features/settings are most used and help us prioritize new features.
Q: Will any of the information that I submit be shared with other companies outside of Oracle?
A: No information about any single data warehouse installation will be shared outside of Oracle. The final report from this study will contain only aggregate data (for example, average database size, or percentage of customers using a given feature).
Q: What impact will running the script have on my system?
A: These scripts are designed to work on any size system, running on any database version (Oracle8i and above), with minimal impact. There are two steps to the process:
  • Run 3 short scripts containing queries against the Oracle data dictionary; these queries have all been tested against systems containing millions of data objects.
  • Run the Remote Diagnostic Assistant (RDA) from Oracle Support, which gathers basic information about database, the hardware, and operating system environment; RDA is widely used by support. The entire process should take no more than 15-30 minutes.
