Installing the Demo Database Schema

Before you begin

Before you can use the tutorials or samples, you must perform the following steps:

1. Install (and upgrade, if you have an existing installation) the Oracle9i database, as described in the BI Beans installation guide. You must also install the required patchsets. Installation of the demo database schema will fail if the correct patchsets are not installed.

2. If you have not already done so, install SQL*Plus on the computer that is running the Oracle9i database.

3. Install the Oracle9i database schema named BIBDEMO.

   Installation scripts create a BIBDEMO user (whose password is also BIBDEMO). This user owns the star schema and materialized views that are required to support the tutorials and samples. The installation steps are different on the Sun Solaris and Windows NT/2000 versions of Oracle9i.

4. If you have not already done so, install and configure the BI Beans Catalog. The BI Beans Catalog allows users to save and share analyses and is used in the tutorials and samples.

To install the sample schema on Oracle9i on Sun Solaris:

1. Create a directory on the computer that is running the Oracle9i database. This install_home directory is the location to which you will upload the data files that are required to build the BIBDEMO schema.

2. On the computer where BI Beans is installed, locate the bibeans_home/bibdemo_schema directory (where bibeans_home is the root directory of your BI Beans installation). Use FTP to transfer all of the files that are found in this directory to the install_home directory on your server machine.

3. Log on to the server machine using the user ID oracle.

4. Navigate to the install_home directory.

5. To ensure that the scripts (*.sh files) can be executed, issue the following command from the UNIX command line:

   chmod 755 *.sh

6. Set the NLS_LANG environment variable to AMERICAN_AMERICA.UTF8. You can skip this step if your number format settings are already similar to the U.S. number format settings. However, if your number format settings are different or if you are not sure, then you should perform this step.

7. Run ./bibdemo.sh to install the schema. You are prompted for the following information:

   • The location of the database files (*.dbf). Typically, for an instance named ORCL, this will be oracle_home/oradata/orcl.

   • The directory where the generated log files should be placed.

   • The password for the sys as sysdba user.

   • The password for the olapsys user.

This script takes approximately 15 minutes to run, depending on the machine specifications. It is normal to see some error messages while the script is running. In addition, when materialized views are being created in the database, the script will appear to stop; this is also normal. A clear message will tell you when the script has completed.

Note: The script removes the existing Sales History OLAP Catalog metadata and replaces it with BI Beans demonstration metadata. If you do not want to remove the Sales History metadata, then simply comment out the following line from the bibdemo.sh script:

sqlplus sh/sh @sh_drop_cwm.sql

If you want to reinstall the Sales History metadata later, then log into the database with SQL*Plus, specifying sh as the user name and sh as the password, then execute the following script:

@sh_olp_c

To install the sample schema on Oracle9i on Windows NT/2000:

1. Create a directory on the computer that is running the Oracle9i database. This install_home directory is the location to which you will upload the data files that are required to build the BIBDEMO schema.

2. On the computer where BI Beans is installed, locate the bibeans_home\bibdemo_schema folder (where bibeans_home is the root folder of your BI Beans installation). Copy all of the files found in this folder to the install_home folder on your server machine.

3. Open a DOS prompt and navigate to the install_home folder.

4. Run bibdemo.bat to install the schema, using the following syntax:

   bibdemo.bat <path to Oracle database files >

   For example, for an instance named my9iService, enter the following:

   bibdemo.bat D:\OraHome1\oradata\my9iService

   You are prompted for the password for the sys as sysdba user.

The log files (*.log) that are generated by the installation script are stored in the folder from which you ran the script.

You are now ready to begin using the tutorials. The schema is also required for samples.
