Application Grid at Oracle OpenWorld 2009
The application grid approach to middleware infrastructure allows a set of applications to meet peak demand and improve overall performance by sharing resources. It also allows for rapid application deployment and automated dynamic adjustments—enabling greater efficiency, competitiveness, and simplification in your IT environment. To make application grid computing possible, Oracle brings together key industry-leading technologies: Oracle WebLogic Server, Tuxedo, Coherence, JRockit, and Enterprise Manager.
Oracle application grid experts will be presenting conference sessions, panels, and hands-on-labs at Oracle OpenWorld 2009. Application grid can be found at numerous stations in the Oracle DEMOgrounds, staffed by developers, managers, architects and executives from the WebLogic, Tuxedo, Coherence, JRockit, Enterprise Manager, and Virtualization teams, ready to lead you through interactive product demonstrations and answer your questions. |

| Abstract |
Service Orientation allows IT to modularize business applications into reusable service components that can be combined together in new ways that are more flexible and capable of readily adapting to business growth and change. However through service enabling of legacy application assets into reusable business services, you may be unwittingly driving increased traffic toward backend systems that weren't ever designed or appropriately sized to handle such loads. In this session, co-presented by Wellpoint CTO Carl Dumont, we will learn how Wellpoint is using a service result cache to build a Data Grid into their SOA fabric that offloads and dramatically reduces load on backend systems, resulting in a cost savings in millions per year. |

| Abstract |
Oracle TopLink's TopLink grid feature provides integration between EclipseLink JPA (Java Persistence API) and Oracle Coherence to support the construction of highly scalable JPA applications. TopLink Grid makes it possible to use the Oracle Coherence grid as a shared L2 cache for JPA so that any JPA application can be easily grid-enabled. But TopLink grid goes beyond using Oracle Coherence as simply an L2 cache, by enabling the use of JPA querying with the Oracle Coherence grid. This hands-on lab introduces TopLink grid and a small JPA example that attendees will grid-enable with TopLink grid and Oracle Coherence. |

Real-Time Publishing and Databaseless Site Architecture with a SOA-Fed Data Grid |
| Speakers |
Shopzilla; Randy Stafford, Oracle |
| Abstract |
Timely publication of business-critical information is difficult when the route from source systems to Web site servers follows a tangled trail of heterogeneous databases; extract, transform, and load operations; scheduled jobs; and batch programs. Shopzilla achieved near-real-time publishing by re-engineering its publishing system around SOA. The resulting encapsulation enabled performance optimization of the production Web site by moving from a traditional RDBMS-based architecture to one based on an Oracle Coherence data grid as the primary data storage system, yielding a maximally performant, available, scalable site. This case study covers the architecture, re-engineering project, business benefits, and implementation details. |

The Service-Result-Cache Pattern: Using a Data Grid in the SOA Tier |
| Speakers |
Dave Chappell, Oracle; Clemens Utschig-Utschig, Oracle |
| Abstract |
By service-enabling legacy application assets into reusable business services, you may be unwittingly driving increased traffic toward back-end systems that weren't designed or appropriately sized to handle such loads. The challenge of building excess capacity in to back-end systems to handle peak loads at certain times of the day, month, or year can be costly and time-consuming. An application grid makes it possible for a business to meet SLAs by enabling applications to achieve predictable latency under increased sustained loads. Combined with a SOA using the service result cache pattern, an application grid can dramatically reduce load on back-end systems by caching results from frequently accessed services. Persistence with JPA/Oracle Coherence in a Complex Electronic Medical Record Application |
| Speakers |
Rob Calvert, US Oncology; Randy Stafford, Oracle |
| Abstract |
Imagine the cost and risk of running dozens of instances of your most-revenue-critical hosted multitenant application due to scalability limits in a legacy object-oriented database management system (OODBMS) technology from a vendor of questionable viability as your business grows. Imagine the management and technical challenges of changing the persistence approach in such a production application - with an extremely complex domain model; billions of objects in the database; and highly polymorphic, AI-based, medically critical application logic - from a Smalltalk OODBMS to Java object-relationship mapping. This session shows how one company met these challenges with Oracle TopLink, Java Persistence API, and Oracle Coherence. |

Oracle JDeveloper 11g JAX-WS Web Services: As Easy as 1-2-3 - XSD, WSDL, Generate! |
| Speakers |
Chris Muir, SAGE Computing Services |
| Abstract |
Web services used to be hard. Creating XML schemas, long-winded Web Services Description Language (WSDL) code, and back-end Java code took much effort. Today Oracle JDeveloper 11g enables developers to visually design both the schemas and WSDL code by drag and drop and generate Web services based on both of these with the latest Java EE JAX-WS/JAXB Web service standards with just a few clicks. Finally programmers can get back to thinking about the programming problem they need to solve without wasting time setting up the Web service artifacts, which can be tedious, error-prone, and very repetitive. A Next-Generation Platform for Virtualized Java |
| Speakers |
Daniel Kallander, Oracle; Mikael Vidstedt, Oracle |
| Abstract |
Come to this session to find out why virtual platforms will soon also be the fastest platforms for Java. With truly groundbreaking new technology, Oracle brings speed, simplicity, and security to Java in virtual environments. It has long been true that the Java virtual machine (JVM) provides many of the same services an operating system does; add to that a virtualization layer that abstracts the hardware and isolates applications, and it becomes obvious that a full-blown operating system is largely redundant. Now Oracle has developed precisely the software components needed to complement the standard JVM and hypervisor. The result: an OS replacement module just a few megabytes large, extremely efficient, and incredibly simple to configure. |
