What is OMA-DS?
OMA-DS (formerly known as SyncML) is the standard
protocol for synchronizing devices and applications over the Internet.
It enables users to synchronize calendar information between OMA-DS-enabled
mobile devices and the Calendar server, using Oracle Mobile Data Sync.
Users connect their devices to Oracle Mobile Data Sync using any standard
Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) connection. This can be done with a
device cradle or by using wireless technologies such as GPRS, EDGE, Bluetooth
and WiFi, depending on the device. The first data types supported for
remote synchronization were calendar, task and contact data, but SyncML
will soon support the synchronization of files, e-mail and other enterprise
data.

as part of a standard Oracle Collaboration Suite installation.

What are the benefits of using Oracle Mobile Data Sync?
User benefits: Users simply connect
to the Internet to synchronize with corporate networks, enabling greater
efficiency with anywhere, anytime access to information that is always
up-to-date. Users no longer require conduits from PDAs to PCs, and maintain
the flexibility to choose the OMA-DS-compliant device that best suits
their needs, with the assurance that they will not lose any synchronization
functionality. For calendar users, Oracle Mobile Data Sync is a complete
solution, offering full two-way synchronization of events, tasks and contacts,
including meeting recurrence rules and respect of meeting ownership.
Administrator benefits: With Oracle
Mobile Data Sync, there are no more desktop dependencies for synchronization.
Corporations need no longer worry about device-specific or platform-specific
software installations on devices or PCs. Dependencies on connections
to the data server over a Local Area Network (LAN) or Virtual Private
Network (VPN) are also no longer necessary.

Why would I choose Oracle Mobile Data Sync instead of Oracle Calendar
Sync?
Although they both use the same synchronization engine,
Oracle Mobile Data Sync and Oracle Calendar Sync differ in their transportability.
Oracle Calendar Sync requires a physical connection from the cradle to
your corporate network, while Oracle Mobile Data Sync has no dependency
on wired connections or corporate networks. Oracle Calendar Sync desktop
PDA software replaces your device's sync conduits, allowing you to synchronize
your PDA with the Calendar server through a physical connection to a LAN
or VPN network. Oracle Mobile Data Sync synchronizes over any HTTP connection,
removing dependency on physical connections and allowing full synchronization
wherever an HTTP connection is available — whether physical or wireless.
If you are a very mobile worker and would benefit from anywhere, anytime
synchronization, Oracle Mobile Data Sync may be your preferred option.

Do I need a wireless device?
No. Synchronizing with Oracle Mobile Data Sync can be
achieved through any connection to the Internet — whether wireless or
physical. This means non-wireless PDA users can connect to Oracle Mobile
Data Sync using a device cradle and an established Internet connection,
as long as they are running an OMA-DS client on the device.

Does my device require special certification or special software?
Oracle has a list of certified OMA-DS devices that it
supports, as described on the Oracle
Mobile Data Sync - Getting Started page. Many of these devices have
supported OMA-DS software built in, but in the case of legacy PDAs like
Palm and PocketPC, you must install the appropriate Synthesis SyncML client.

Can I use my Palm or Pocket PC with Oracle Mobile Data Sync?
Yes. Users of legacy PDAs can take advantage of Oracle
Mobile Data Sync by installing the appropriate Synthesis SyncML client
on their Palm or Pocket PC devices. With this third-party OMA-DS client,
Palm and Pocket PC users can now use Oracle Mobile Data Sync synchronization
alongside the newer crop of OMA-DS-enabled devices. Even non-wireless
Palm and Pocket PC devices can be used, as long as they can connect to
the Internet through a device cradle. In the case of Palm devices, you
will need software to establish a PPP connection through your USB cable,
as Palm does not support this capability "out of the box."

Do I need to subscribe to a special service or special operator?
Once you have a OMA-DS-enabled device running a standard
OMA-DS client, or have installed OMA-DS client software from a third-party
vendor (in the case of Palm and Pocket PC users), you must then ensure
that you are subscribed to data services from your wireless service provider.
In the case of legacy PDAs that allow you to connect to the Internet through
a cradle, wireless data services are not required.

Do I need to modify my device settings?
To set up your device and configure it to work with
Oracle Mobile Data Sync, read the Oracle
Mobile Data Sync - Getting Started page. As an emerging technology,
OMA-DS today can sometimes lead to a variety of minor frustrations that
can take away from its benefits. These limitations are generally caused
by inconsistent and problematic implementations of OMA-DS clients by device
manufacturers, or by limitations in data representation. Reviewing the
Getting Started page will help you avoid these issues and get the most
out of Oracle Mobile Data Sync.

Can I back up my device data?
Yes, you can use HotSync to locally back up your Palm
device. See the Oracle
Mobile Data Sync - Getting Started page for instructions. We do not
recommend attempting to back up your Pocket PC using ActiveSync if you
use Oracle Connector for Outlook. Doing so may result in unexpected behavior,
including loss of data.

Are you having trouble synchronizing your Pocket PC?
Occasionally, you may experience unexpected behavior
when synchronizing your Pocket PC device using the Synthesis SyncML client.
To resolve this, try using the Pocket PC Reload Device feature, as described
on the Oracle
Mobile Data Sync Configuration Page.

Are you using a supported OMA-DS-enabled device?
In order to synchronize with Oracle Mobile Data Sync,
you must have a OMA-DS-enabled device running a standard OMA-DS client.
If you are using a Palm or Pocket PC device, make sure you install the
appropriate Synthesis SyncML client.
The OMA-DS-compliant devices that have been tested and
certified to work with Oracle Mobile Data Sync are listed on the Oracle
Mobile Data Sync - Getting Started page.
Other OMA-DS-compliant devices that adhere faithfully
to the OMA-DS standard may work with Oracle Mobile Data Sync, but Oracle
does not guarantee this, nor can Oracle provide support for these devices
at this time.

Can you access Web pages with your device?
Wireless synchronization: Your device
should already be data-enabled. If you think this is not the case for
your device, contact your service provider.
To verify that you have Internet access from your device,
try accessing a Web page. In most cases, the setup required to access
the Internet is already configured. If this is not the case, contact your
wireless provider. Your provider can give you the information required
to do the necessary configuration. For example, user name, password, server
address and setup instructions.
Non-wireless synchronization: Most
devices (Pocket PC, Sony Ericsson P900) sold with a cradle connect to
the Internet through the cradle and your desktop’s Internet connection.
If you are a Palm user, you must install connection software that establishes
a PPP connection before being able to connect to the Internet.Verify that
you are able to connect to a Web page when your device is in the cradle
and connected to your desktop. If you cannot access a Web page, contact
your service provider.

Are you using a valid connection profile?
Wireless synchronization: If you use
multiple connection profiles, verify that the profile used by your OMA-DS
client is the same connection profile used for your Web access. Note that
this issue only applies to certain devices. For more information, refer
to your device manufacturer’s documentation.

Are your OMA-DS settings correct?
Enter the OMA-DS server’s URL in the device, along
with your Calendar user name and password. The administrator of the OMA-DS
server can provide you with this information.
NOTE: If your device does not support
SSL (HTTPS) connections, remove the s from https in this URL. Be aware
that data transmitted over non-SSL connections can be intercepted.
