Oracle Application Express is the native Web application development framework for the Oracle Database. Since its inception in February 2004 as a feature of Oracle Database 10g, Oracle Application Express has seen tremendous uptake, with hundreds of thousands of downloads, and thousands of customers with secure, scalable web applications deployed into production. Oracle Application Express is a standard database component of Oracle Database 11g. Oracle continues to invest in the development and support of Oracle Application Express and new versions of Application Express will be released at least annually. The following is a roadmap for the upcoming releases of Oracle Application Express.

Oracle Application Express 4.0
Oracle Application Express 4.0 will focus on declarative support for Web 2.0 features as well as improved usability and simplified development. Application Express 4.0 will incorporate the following:
- Websheets - A fast, simple and secure way to gather and share information. Using only a Web browser, end-users can define pages, data grids and reports. With the data grids they can do inline editing, add LOVs, add validations, etc., and then select the community that can see and edit their data.
- Dynamic Actions - Declarative interface to implement dynamic client-side behavior declaratively without the need to know JavaScript (e.g. show, hide, enable, disable).
- Plug-Ins - Extensible framework enabling developers to "plug in" and share their own custom item, region and dynamic action types.
- Improved tabular forms, including declarative support for validations and additional item types.
- Team Development - Facilitates the management of the application development process including Features, To-Do, Bugs and Milestones.
- Feedback - Ability to incorporate a feedback mechanism into your applications that automatically captures session state information. It is also fully integrated into Team Development so feedback can easily be converted into features or bugs.
- Improved charting engine, based on AnyChart 5.1, including declarative Flash-based Maps and Gantt charts.
- Enhanced Web services - Declarative RESTful Web services together with improvements to Web service integration and capabilities.
- Expanded Interactive Reports - Integrated report, icon and detail views plus compound filters, group by, email notifications, and additional save options.
- Modernized Application Builder - Usability improvements including integrated application search, advisor, dashboards, highlighting current actions, and improved Administration screens.
- Automatic Time Zone application setting with improved support for timestamps.
- Flexible Workspace Authentication.
- Oracle APEX Listener - A J2EE-based alternative to mod plsql providing improved performance, direct file upload, file system-based page caching, and improved PDF printing.
- Numerous functional and performance improvements.
