Contents

1. Before starting up the first time

  • Back up your .sqldeveloper folder

Oracle SQL Developer 1.1 is NOT backward compatible to SQL Developer 1.0 for SQL History and Reports. If preserving your 1.0 SQL History and User Defined reports is important to you and you want to work with SQL Developer 1.0 and evaluate 1.1, you MUST back up these files.

  1. Backup your sql history and user defined reports from your 1.0 instance
These files are named SqlHistory.xml and UserReports.xml
They are located under C:\Documents and Settings\your_user\.sqldeveloper
  2. If you plan to work with 1.0 once you have completed your evaluation, restore these files to the .sqldeveloper folder before you start using SQL Developer 1.0 again.

Note: If you plan to switch between 1.0 and 1.1 regularly until production of 1.1, then if you want to preserve your user defined reports and history, it might be easiest to save the .sqldeveloper folder for each of the two releases and switch the folders back and forth.

  • Export your connections from 1.0.
    • Right-click on Connections in your 1.0 instance.

2. To Install and Run

  1. Unzip the sqldeveloper-2271.zip (or sqldeveloper_2271-no-jre.zip) in any folder on your hard drive
  2. Run the executable:
    • On windows, run sqldeveloper.exe
    • On linux/osx, run sh sqldeveloper
  3. Do not migrate your settings.
  4. Import the connections that you exported from 1.0.

3. To Provide Feedback

  • Please do not call Oracle Support for feedback on this evaluation release.
  • You may log issues on the forum.
  • Please be sure to mark clearly the release you are using.

6. Third Party Databases

Loading Third Party Drivers:

To load a third party driver, go to Tools > Preferences > Database > ThirdParty Drivers. Click Add Entry and add your specific jar file. The jars on this preference panel are used for all third party databases.
  • MySQL Databases
  • Download the MySQL Drivers from the MySQL Site. There are two drivers here:

    • MySQL Connector/j 5.0
Unzip the zip file and take the mysql-connector-java-5.0.4-bin.jar as your driver.jar
    • MySQL Connector/J 3.1
Unzip the zip file and take the mysql-connector-java-3.1.14-bin.jar as your driver.jar
  • SQL Server Databases

Download the JTDS driver from here. Unzip the file and take the jtds-1.2.jar out of this. This is your driver.
