1.1 What is Oracle Application Server 10g?
Oracle Application Server 10g is the latest release of Oracle's Application Server, succeeding Oracle9i Application Server (Oracle9iAS) Release 2.0, versions 9.0.2 and 9.0.3.

1.2 What are the major differences between Oracle9i Application Server (Oracle9iAS) and Oracle Application Server 10g?
Oracle Application Server 10g is the first application server designed to take advantage of new grid technology features like policy-based resource management, metric-based workload management, and centralized user provisioning. These new capabilities are reflected in the new product name and together with the Oracle Database 10g, provide a complete grid-enabled infrastructure for the enterprise. Some of Oracle Application Server 10g new features include enhanced integration functionality introduced with Oracle Process Connect in the Enterprise Edition and enhanced identity management features with Oracle Certificate Authority available in the Identity Management Option of the Standard Edition or the Enterprise Edition. In addition, the Wireless and Personalization options are now standard features included in the Enterprise Edition.

1.3 How is Oracle Application Server 10g packaged and what components are included in each edition?
Oracle Application Server 10g is available in Java, Standard, and Enterprise Editions. The Wireless and Personalization Options formerly available as options to Oracle9i Application Server Enterprise Edition are now included as standard features of the Enterprise Edition of Oracle Application Server 10g. Oracle Application Server 10g introduces a new Identity Management option which is available as an option for the Standard Edition. There are also two new Enterprise Manager Packs, Diagnostics and Configuration Management, that are available for Oracle Application Server 10g. 2.1 What platforms will Oracle Application Server 10g be available on?

3.0 Licensing

3.1 Are the Oracle Application Server 10g modules licensed separately?
No. Oracle Application Server 10g is licensed as a complete product set. However, there are three editions: Java, Standard, and Enterprise. There is also an Identity Management option for the Standard Edition, and Diagnostics and Configuration Management Packs available for Enterprise Manager. Customers should purchase a license for the most appropriate of these editions according to their requirements.

4.1 What versions of Solaris is Oracle Application Server 10g certified against?
Solaris 2.8 and 2.9. Please refer to the complete certification information available on MetaLink.

4.2 Is Oracle Application Server 10g certified for Windows 2003?
Yes. Windows 2000, Windows 2003, and Windows NT are all certified with all editions of Oracle Application Server 10g. Windows XP is only certified with the Java Edition.

4.3 What version of the database is Oracle Application Server 10g certified against?
9.0.1.4, 9.2.0.4, and 10g (when available), each in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions. RAC and Cold-cluster failover environments are also supported. Please refer to the complete certification information available on MetaLink.

4.4 What version(s) of the JDK/JRE is Oracle Application Server 10g certified against?
JDK/JRE 1.4.1. Please refer to MetaLink for JDK certification for other components.

4.5 Does Oracle Application Server 10g require Oracle Database Enterprise Edition?
No. Oracle Application Server 10g can be used with either the Standard or Enterprise Edition of any of the supported databases (9.0.1.5, 9.2.0.4 or 10g). However, Oracle Internet Directory replication features require the Enterprise Edition. All other features of the Oracle Application Server are supported on the Standard Edition of the databases.

5.0 Product Upgrades

5.1 Is there an upgrade path from earlier versions of the Application Server to Oracle Application Server 10g?
Yes. An upgrade assistant is provided to upgrade versions 1.0.2.2 and 9.0.2. However, for more specific information on release upgrades or for specific component upgrades such as for OID, Forms, etc. please refer to the Oracle Application Server 10g Upgrade documentation.

6.0 Product Functionality

6.1 Is Oracle Application Server 10g J2EE 1.3 Compatible(TM)?
Yes.

6.2 Can customers store their own data in the infrastructure database?
Yes. However, any use of the infrastructure database for this purpose must be licensed separately. Also, use of any Oracle Database Enterprise Edition features requires customers to purchase an Oracle Database EE license as well.

7.0 Key Product Messages

7.1 What are the key product messages for Oracle Application Server 10g?
Oracle Application Server 10g is a major new product release of the Application Server and a cornerstone of the Oracle 10g Grid Platform. It continues to enhance the capabilities offered in earlier releases of the application server and adds significant new functionality in key areas such as integration, security, and management. Specifically, the three primary product messages are:

  • Most Productive Development - Oracle Application Server 10g provides the most productive development environment for developers to create Internet Applications including J2EE Applications, Web Services, Enterprise Portals, Wireless and Business Intelligence Applications. Further, it is a 100% standards compliant, supporting standards such as: J2EE 1.3, Web Services, SOAP, WSDL, UDDI 2.0, RosettaNet 1.1/2.0, WebDAV, LDAP v3, SSL v3, and XML.
  • Most Reliable Deployment - Further, Oracle Application Server 10g provides the most reliable platform to deploy Internet Applications including: the fastest J2EE and Web Services environment, significant enhancements of the OracleAS Web Cache, improved High Availability and Clustering Support; and complete Management and Security of all OracleAS components.
  • Lowest TCO - Additionally, Oracle Application Server 10g is an integrated product further lowering the total cost of ownership - the cost to purchase, operate, and manage the product - an advantage that it enjoys compared to the major competitors BEA and IBM.
