Introduction
The Oracle
Notification Service (formerly known as Push
Service)
is an Oracle online service that allows Oracle Application Server
(OracleAS) Wireless
and OracleAS Portal users to send SMS messages, Emails, Voice
notifications
and Fax messages in an easy to access manner without installing any new
software.
The Oracle
Notification Service is hosted at Oracle's data centers
and is managed and maintained 24x7 by highly skilled staff. Users
connect to it
as a Web Service using an XML SOAP API over HTTP/HTTPS. The UMS portlet
abstracts
this communication and multiprotocol, multidevice complexities for the
OracleAS Portal users.
Via the OracleAS UMS Portlet, Oracle provides an efficient
and
unified
web based messaging interface for OracleAS Portal users to send a
message
to anyone, anywhere on any device and using any transport type.
Currently,
this portlet allows for the sending of SMS, Voice Mails, E-mails, Fax
and
Wireless Access Protocol (WAP)
Messages.
Future extensions may include support for Multimedia Messaging Service
(MMS).
An OracleAS Portal user can sign up for this service and pay per
usage.
The
user of this portlet needs to register and obtain an account with
OracleAS
Wireless Service. However, to encourage the use of this service,
a
trial account of 500 units per IP address has been permitted. For
purchasing
more units and know more about the pricing mechanism, you should send
an
e-mail
to messenger_us@oracle.com.
This article describes how to install the OracleAS UMS Portlet and its
provider. After
installing
the Provider and registering it on your OracleAS Portal, please review
the Oracle Application Server
UMS
Portlet - User Guide
which explains how this portlet works.
"NOTE: The OracleAS UMS Portlet is a sample released for test, evaluation, and education purposes. It is not supported through formal Oracle Support mechanisms. We are, however, very interested in receiving your feedback. Please post any suggestions, questions, or issues to the 'Portal - Portal Development Kit' Discussion Forum on OTN. We will respond as quickly as possible."
Deploying the
OracleAS UMS Portlet
Publishing the OracleAS
UMS Portlet
The Provider's Portlet supports two types of users:
- Paid User - The user has registered and opened an
account with
Oracle. The user will be provided with login information (username and
password) to the web service.
- Trial User - The user is keen to try out this
portlet.
The user will receive an initial trial account with 500 units per IP
address.
Creating the
External Application
Note: You need to register an External Application only if you
are a Paid User or a Trial User connecting to the web
service through a proxy. If you are a Trial User and

Adding
the OracleAS UMS Portlet to a Page
You are now ready to add the Provider's Portlet to a page. Please
review the
Oracle Application Server UMS
Portlet - User Guide
which explains how this portlet works.
Note: If you are a Paid User or a Trial
User connecting to the web service through a proxy, then after
adding
the UMS portlet to an OracleAS Portal page, you might be asked to
update
the login information for the External Application UMSExternalApp
before viewing the portlet. Click on the Update
Login
Information link and enter your Oracle
Notification
Service user credentials properly. The Remember
My
Login Information... checkbox must be checked so that you
do
not have to enter it every time. If you are still asked to Update
Login
Information, it means that your credentials could not be
validated
by Oracle
Notification web service. You cannot proceed unless you
have been authenticated.
