Introduction

The Oracle Notification Service (formerly known as Push Service) is an Oracle online service that allows Oracle Application Server (OracleAS) Wireless and OracleAS Portal users to send SMS messages, Emails, Voice notifications and Fax messages in an easy to access manner without installing any new software.  The Oracle Notification Service is hosted at Oracle's data centers and is managed and maintained 24x7 by highly skilled staff.  Users connect to it as a Web Service using an XML SOAP API over HTTP/HTTPS. The UMS portlet abstracts this communication and multiprotocol, multidevice complexities for the OracleAS Portal users.

Via the OracleAS UMS Portlet,  Oracle provides an efficient and unified web based messaging interface for OracleAS Portal users to send a message to anyone, anywhere on any device and using any transport type.  Currently, this portlet allows for the sending of SMS, Voice Mails, E-mails, Fax and Wireless Access Protocol (WAP) Messages. Future extensions may include support for Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS).

An OracleAS Portal user can sign up for this service and pay per usage.  The user of this portlet needs to register and obtain an account with OracleAS Wireless Service.  However, to encourage the use of this service, a trial account of 500 units per IP address has been permitted.  For purchasing more units and know more about the pricing mechanism, you should send an e-mail to messenger_us@oracle.com.

This article describes how to install the OracleAS UMS Portlet and its provider.  After installing the Provider and registering it on your OracleAS Portal, please review the Oracle Application Server UMS Portlet - User Guide which explains how this portlet works.

"NOTE: The OracleAS UMS Portlet is a sample released for test, evaluation, and education purposes. It is not supported through formal Oracle Support mechanisms. We are, however, very interested in receiving your feedback.  Please post any suggestions, questions, or issues to the 'Portal - Portal Development Kit' Discussion Forum on OTN.  We will respond as quickly as possible."

Deploying the OracleAS UMS Portlet

Please follow the instructions in the Installing Integration Portlet document to deploy the OracleAS UMS Provider.

Publishing the OracleAS UMS Portlet

The Provider's Portlet supports two types of users:
  • Paid User - The user has registered and opened an account with Oracle. The user will be provided with login information (username and password) to the web service.
  •
  • Trial User - The user is keen to try out this portlet. The user will receive an initial trial account with 500 units per IP address.

Creating the External Application

Note: You need to register an External Application only if you are a Paid User or a Trial User connecting to the web service through a proxy.  If you are a Trial User and connecting to the web service directly, you need not create an External Application.
  • Log on to OracleAS Portal as an OracleAS Portal Administrator.  Go to the Administer tab of the OracleAS Portal Builder.  In the SSO Server Administration portlet, click Administer External Applications.
  • Click on Add External Application.  In the External Application Login and Authentication Method section, enter the following:
    • Application Name: UMSExternalApp
    • Login URL: http://your_oc4j_hostname:port/ums/login
    • User Name/ID Field Name: Username
    • Password Field Name: Password
    • Type of Authentication Used: Select POST
In the additional field section, add the following:

Field Name Field Value Display to User
    serviceURL http://messenger.oracle.com/push/webservices Check this box
proxyHost <Optional, specify the proxy host name> Check this box
proxyPort  <Optional, specify the proxy port number> Check this box

Note: serviceURL is a mandatory value.  Specify the proxyHost and proxyPort values only if you are accessing the service URL through a proxy. If you are in the same domain as the hosted service, then DO NOT specify these fields/values in the additional field section.

  • Click OK.
  • Then click on the link for your new UMSExternalApp application and enter the Username and Password.
  • If you are a Trial User, enter Username as "guest" and Password as "welcome1".
  • If you are a Paid User, you need to specify  the Username and Password,  that has been given by the Oracle Notification Service.
  • The Remember My Login Information... checkbox must be checked.
  • If successful, you should see a message similar to "You have successfully registered with Portal".
  • If unsuccessful, you will see a message similar to "Unsuccessful Registration Message" and additional messages h ighlighting the cause of failure. Go back to the External Application and pass the correct credentials.

Registering the Portlet Provider

  1. Login to OracleAS Portal using an account that has administrator privileges. If your home page is not the Build/Administer page, click on the Builder link in the top right corner of the screen. Click on the Build tab if that is not the active tab.
  2. Under the Build tab (on OracleAS Portal Home Page), click on Register Portlet Provider within the portlet called Providers.
  3. Fill out provider information for the UMS Portlet Provider:
    • Name: UMSProvider
    • Display Name: UMS Portlet Provider
    • Timeout: 100
    • Timeout Message: UMS Portlet Provider Timed Out
    • Implementation Style: Web
  4. Click on the Next button to enter the Web Provider specific information
  5. Enter the Web Provider location
    • URL: http://your_oc4j_hostname:port/ums/providers/ums
  6. Scroll down to the User/Session Information section and specify the login frequency as Once Per Session.
  7. If you are a Trial User and connecting to the web service directly (i.e. without a proxy) then ignore Step 8 and go directly to Step 9.
  8. If you are a Paid User or a Trial User connecting to the web service through a proxy, select the radio button labelled The user's identity needs to be mapped to a different name....  In the External Application ID field, select the ID corresponding to External Application UMSExternalApp that you created.
  9. Click on the Finish button to complete the registration
Note: When registering a new provider with OracleAS Portal, only the user who registered the provider has privileges to see the provider/portlets. If necessary, go to the Folder with the name of the provider within the Portlet Repository content area and update the provider privileges as required.

Adding the OracleAS UMS Portlet to a Page

You are now ready to add the Provider's Portlet to a page.  Please review the Oracle Application Server UMS Portlet - User Guide which explains how this portlet works.

Note: If you are a Paid User or a Trial User connecting to the web service through a proxy, then after adding the UMS portlet to an OracleAS Portal page, you might be asked to update the login information for the External Application UMSExternalApp before viewing the portlet.  Click on the Update Login Information link and enter your Oracle Notification Service  user credentials properly.  The Remember My Login Information... checkbox must be checked so that you do not have to enter it every time.  If you are still asked to Update Login Information, it means that your credentials could not be validated by Oracle Notification web service. You cannot proceed unless you have been authenticated.
