Oracle Workflow--FAQ--Oracle Corporation
faq Oracle Database 10g:
Oracle Workflow

This FAQ addresses the most common questions on Oracle Workflow Release 2.6.3 and provides answers to questions on new features, integration, and supported platforms and database versions.

What's new in Oracle Workflow 2.6.3?

Oracle Workflow 2.6.3 includes the following enhancements:

  • Java-based mailer - The Oracle Workflow notification mailer program is now re-implemented in Java, using the standard JavaMail API technology. The mailer now supports outbound SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) and inbound IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) protocols. The mailer is now available on all platforms supported by Oracle Database 10g. The mailer also supports both detail and summary message formats.
  • Oracle Enterprise Manager integration - The Oracle Workflow Manager, which is the dashboard-style system administration component of Oracle Workflow, is now integrated with Oracle Enterprise Manager as a standalone console. Oracle Workflow is created as a target in the Oracle Enterprise Manager Application Server Control during installation.
  • Automated Oracle Internet Directory integration - You can synchronize the user information in your Workflow directory service with Oracle Internet Directory (OID) using Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP). This integration is recommended because it enables you to manage and publish user information in a central location which various systems can reference. OID integration also enables Oracle Workflow to synchronize with other external user directories that are synchronized with OID. Oracle Workflow 2.6.3 automates all the configuration required to enable Oracle Workflow to use LDAP as the directory service.
  • Automated single sign-on - OID integration enables Oracle Workflow to participate in single sign-on through LDAP external authentication with Oracle Application Server 10g Single Sign-On Server. With single sign-on, a user who is logged into any participating Oracle Application Server 10g component is automatically authenticated when accessing any other participating component and does not need to log in again. Oracle Workflow 2.6.3 automates all the configuration required to enable Oracle Workflow for single sign-on.

What are my Oracle Workflow 2.6.3 installation options?

Oracle Workflow Release 2.6.3 is shipped on a separate CD with the Oracle Database 10g CD pack. The Oracle Workflow server component shipped with Oracle Database 10g can be installed only into an Oracle Database 10g Oracle home.

The middle tier component of Oracle Workflow requires Oracle HTTP Server installed in a separate middle tier Oracle home. Use only the version of Oracle HTTP Server and mod_plsql that are included in the software CD pack from which you are installing Oracle Workflow.

The Oracle Workflow Client component shipped with Oracle Database 10g Client CD can be installed only into an Oracle Database 10g Oracle home.

Note: Install the Oracle Workflow Client in a separate Oracle home.

Oracle Workflow is also bundled with the Oracle Application Server ProcessConnect (OracleAS ProcessConnect), Oracle Application Server InterConnect (OracleAS InterConnect), and Oracle Content Management SDK components of Oracle Application Server 10g.

Are there any known issues with Oracle Workflow 2.6.3?

What languages does Oracle Workflow 2.6.3 support?

The Oracle Workflow 2.6.3 Server supports all 29 languages which Oracle Database 10g supports.

How can I upgrade to Oracle Workflow 2.6.3?

You can upgrade to Oracle Workflow 2.6.3 only from Oracle Workflow versions 2.6, 2.6.1, or 2.6.2.

Customers who are still on Oracle8i Database must upgrade their database version to Oracle Database 10g.

Can custom Java code be integrated with Oracle Workflow 2.6.3?

Yes. The Oracle Workflow Builder now supports a type of function activity called an external Java function activity. External Java function activities let you model workflow processes that include Java programs executed on the middle tier.  The Java Function Activity Agent is a perpetually running Java program which dequeues messages from the wf_outbound_queue, executes a Java class you defined at design time, and enqueues the message back on the wf_inbound_queue. You can run multiple Java Function Activity Agent processes at the same time if required to handle a larger volume of activities.

Does Oracle Workflow 2.6.3 support Oracle Real Application Clusters?

Yes. Oracle Workflow 2.6.3 supports Oracle Real Application Clusters, which enable out-of-the-box, near-linear scaling transparency. Oracle Real Application Clusters provide transparent application scalability by quickly and efficiently sharing frequently accessed data across all the servers in a cluster, resolving all manners of contention between servers in the process.

Can Oracle E-Business Suite customers install Oracle Workflow 2.6.3?

Oracle E-Business Suite customers must not install the standalone version of Oracle Workflow 2.6.3. Instead, an Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11i patch is available which upgrades Release 11i customers from Oracle Workflow 2.5 to Oracle Workflow 2.6.
