Oracle9i JDeveloper and Rational ClearCase

Oracle9i JDeveloper provides extensive capabilities for using any source code control tool to manage your Java project development. Oracle9i JDeveloper is fully integrated with Oracle9i Software Configuration Manager (SCM) and offers built-in support for the Concurrent Versions System (CVS) and Rational ClearCase. Furthermore, Oracle9i JDeveloper publishes an open Source Control Extension Application Programmatic Interface (API), which is a framework for building your own extensions in Oracle9i JDeveloper to support the source code control tool of your choice.

Oracle9i JDeveloper provides the ability to use the source code control features of Rational ClearCase release 4.0 and later. Once you have configured Oracle9i JDeveloper to work with ClearCase, you can add files to source control, and check them in and out from the Navigator.

Setting Up Oracle9i JDeveloper to Work with ClearCase

The first step is to select ClearCase as the preferred tool for your source code control using the Tools - Preferences Menu. You can choose in which format Oracle9i JDeveloper displays its report when you compare two versions of one file or compare two files. You can also specify how many of the most recent events (that effectively make up a 'version history') you want to see from the event history of a file and if you see events that originate from the actions of all users or just the changes you make.

After you complete this general information, set up and mount your ClearCase views using ClearCase as normal.

Manage Your Java Projects with ClearCase

To manage your projects successfully from within the Oracle9i JDeveloper Integrated Development Environment (IDE), ensure that you create new workspaces, projects and files in the correct location in your ClearCase view.

Oracle9i JDeveloper gives you the ability to complete a wide range of key ClearCase source code control activities, using either the File - Source Control menu or the right click mouse menu. This includes explicitly adding workspaces, projects and files to ClearCase to be able to with them under ClearCase source control.

As you work on your Java project, you can check files in and out of ClearCase, undo a checkout if you do not want to keep your changes, list those files checked out, compare files and view the status and history of a file. You can add comments when performing many of the actions to record why this change or event occurred. When you no longer need a file, you can remove it from ClearCase within Oracle9i JDeveloper and the file is removed from the current version of the directory containing it.
