Oracle9i Warehouse Builder Overview

The first step in building a successful Business Intelligence (BI) infrastructure is effective consolidation of the data across all transactional systems. Once the data is consolidated, users can perform an array of reporting, ad-hoc querying, and sophisticated analysis. A central data warehouse guarantees a consistent view across the enterprise, ensuring accurate decision-making.

Oracle9i Warehouse Builder is a tool for designing, deploying and managing enterprise data warehouses, data marts and e-Business intelligence applications. Oracle9i Warehouse Builder includes the following capabilities: Dimensional design, Extract Transform and Load (ETL) process design, extraction from disparate source systems, extensive metadata reporting and integration with Oracle 9iAS Discoverer, Oracle Workflow and Oracle Enterprise Manager. Oracle Warehouse Builder is a component of the Oracle9i Developer Suite.

This daily feature focuses on the design capabilities and the next daily feature will focus on the ETL process.

Designing the Target Warehouse

Oracle9i Warehouse Builder enables the design and creation of various models for the target schema. The wizard driven design process supports both relational and dimensional models. Oracle9i Warehouse Builder features wizards and graphical editors for tables, views, fact tables, and dimensions. Warehouse Builder also provides designers the capabilities to design the end user query tool environment.

Modeling Sources and Targets

Oracle9i Warehouse builder provides an easy wizard driven way to capture the metadata for the source systems. After capturing this information, developers use these metadata representations of the source to model the extraction processes. The supported source systems are:

  • Oracle
  • Flat Files
  • XML
  • ODBC
  • DB2, Sybase, Informix, SQL Server
  • SAP R/3
  • Mainframe
The supported target systems are:
  • Oracle
  • Flat Files
Metadata Management

While creating the metadata for the warehouse design, designers can use Warehouse Builder's powerful metadata reporting facilities to share information with business users. Warehouse Builder provides a large number of pre built metadata reports. Sophisticated reports such as data lineage and impact analysis reports are among the standard, web-based reports provided.
