Oracle9iAS InterConnect Adapter for PeopleSoft 7.5

Data Sheet
November 2001

The Oracle9iAS InterConnect Adapter for PeopleSoft 7.5 enables integration with PeopleSoft Release 7.5 application systems.  It supports both PeopleSoft Message Agent and Open Query access methods.  Together with the Oracle Publishing Engine - a component of the adapter that allows internal PeopleSoft events to be detected and published to external systems - the adapter provides real-time, bi-directional integration capabilities with PeopleSoft 7.5 systems.

PeopleSoft Message Agent
PeopleSoft 7.5 applications are exposed as a set of panels and panel groups, with a collection of related panels comprising a panel group.  With the PeopleSoft Message Agent, you can access PeopleSoft panel groups outside the PeopleSoft environment.  Each panel in a PeopleSoft panel group is used to enter and retrieve information, normally through human interaction. Access to PeopleSoft panels is provided through a set of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), together with a message definition.  A message definition creates the mapping between fields in the message definition and fields on a particular PeopleSoft panel.  In this way, PeopleSoft application logic is exposed.  Message definitions are created using the PeopleSoft Application Designer.

The InterConnect Adapter for PeopleSoft 7.5 acts as a client Message Agent program,  and enables Oracle9iAS Integration to access and call message agent definitions within the PeopleSoft application server.  The adapter invokes the appropriate message definition when it receives an inbound call from the Oracle9iAS Integration platform.

Support both Publish/Subscribe and Request/Reply
Oracle9iAS Integration and the PeopleSoft 7.5 adapter support both asynchronous Publish/Subscribe and synchronous Request/Reply communication models.  With Publish/Subscribe, a message is created based on some event.  This message is then published and any applications which have subscribed to this type of event are notified.  The application where the event was published does not receive any subsequent return information.  In some  cases, however, it may be desirable or necessary to return certain information back to the originating application.  This is often the case when automating business processes that span different application systems, such as Oracle ERP and PeopleSoft.  In these cases, the Request Reply model is needed.  With Request/Reply, the application where the event originated can receive information back from the call.  For example, an Oracle ERP system may need to obtain certain employee information from a PeopleSoft HR system.  The Oracle ERP system may raise an event for requesting such information and provide the necessary employee identification.  The PeopleSoft 7.5 adapter could then invoke a message definition which would return the requested information to the caller, after retrieving it from the HR database.

The InterConnect design tool is used to define all events, messaging model (synchronous or asynchronous), and specific mapping and transformations between the participating application systems.  Within the design tool,  the PeopleSoft adapter provides real-time, dynamic browsing of  information in the PeopleSoft system, including all message definitions.

PeopleSoft Open Query
PeopleSoft Open Query allows predefined queries to be defined within the system and query requests and results are returned using the ODBC standard.  The PeopleSoft Application Designer is used to define SQL queries on the PeopleSoft application schema.  These queries can be simple queries, limited to a single table or they can be complex queries containing Join clauses and where clause filters.  Once created, the InterConnect design tool can then be used to dynamically view these defined Open Query definitions and use them within the integration environment.  For example, a Query could be constructed such that it returns specific customer information, based on a given customer number. For Open Query, the PeopleSoft Adapter utilizes the PeopleSoft ODBC driver.

Publish PeopleSoft Events via Oracle Publishing Engine
The Oracle Publishing Engine provides event publication capabilities within the PeopleSoft 7.5 application system.  It can track changes to the system and publish this information to external (subscribing) systems.  This feature dramatically improves the integration capabilities available with PeopleSoft 7.5 systems since PeopleSoft 7.5 does not natively support publishing of internal events.  For example, the publishing engine can be configured to periodically check for the creation of new Customers within the PeopleSoft system.  When a new customer is created, the customer information is retrieved and published to external systems.

The PeopleSoft system must be configured so that these new events (e.g.. Create Customer) cause the event to be logged.  The Publishing Engine will periodically check the logs and extract and publish the necessary information based on new customers. Together with the native Message Agent and Open Query capabilities of PeopleSoft 7.5, complete, bi-directional integration solutions can be created.

Resource Management
The PeopleSoft 7.5 adapter provides numerous resource management services that allow you to effectively utilize system resources.  Multiple instances of the PeopleSoft adapter can be deployed so that load balancing and fail over capabilities can be implemented.  The adapter is multi-threaded and  uses both connection and object pooling.  Because PeopleSoft system log-on is an expensive process, performance can be significantly improved with connection pooling.  The PeopleSoft adapter supports connection pooling by initially opening a predefined (configurable) number of PeopleSoft connections.   These connections are then used at run-time to service inbound requests, thus reducing the overall processing time for each requests.
