Enterprise IT practices may require that responses to certain event
occurrences be handled in certain ways. For example, if the database
updown event triggers, administrators may want to automatically
open an in-house trouble-ticket so that the appropriate IT staff
can respond to this event occurrence. An administrators may also
want to have all crucial event information rolled up into 3rd party
framework vendor software. The ability to provide customized automatic
responses to event occurrences can be achieved by using the Event
Handler or traditional SNMP.
Event Handler
The Event Handler is an integral part of the Oracle Management
Server. It listens for event notifications and responds to these
events in ways specified by the administrator. The Event Handler's
response capability is performed by its two components:
- Event Logger - allows the Event Handler to log events
to designated log files where 3rd party log reader tools can import
them to their desired software, i.e., Tivoli's logfile reader.
- Command Executor - executes simple commands in response
to event occurrences. The command executor looks at a set of user-defined
templates to decide what command to execute in response to event
occurrences. i.e., customized executables can be designed to pass
the desired event information to any 3rd party software such as
Enterprise Manager's Integration solution with HP OpenView.
You can use either or both components in response to a triggered
event.
Event Handler Process:

Prior to passing event notifications for further processing, the
Event Handler also provides a simple filtering mechanism that allows
system administrators to specify the conditions by which the events
are passed to either or both components.
Oracle Simple Network
Management Protocol
The Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is acknowledged as
the published, open standard for heterogeneous network management
applications.
Designed primarily for database, network, and system administrators,
Oracle SNMP Support integrates the management of Oracle products
into a number of existing, widely-used management systems. This
feature enables key Oracle products running anywhere on an enterprise's
network to be located, identified, and monitored by a management
station running at a centrally located node, in much the same way
and using much the same tools as traditionally have been used to
monitor the activity of the network itself. It thereby integrates
the tasks of database and of network administrators, enabling both
to use some of the same tools and to better integrate their tasks.
Tools using SNMP traditionally provide powerful features for monitoring
network components. Oracle extends this power to enable SNMP monitoring
of some of its own products.
Besides its network administration capabilities, Oracle SNMP support
allows an Oracle database server to be located and queried by any
SNMP-based network management system. SNMP is the accepted standard
underlying many popular network management systems such as:
- HP's OpenView
- Digital's POLYCENTER Manager on NetView
- IBM's NetView/6000
- IBM's Tivoli
- Novell's NetWare Management System
- SunSoft's SunNet Manager
- CA Unicenter
