Re: Announcing the opening of the Oracle Rdb version 7.2 Beta TestProgram

Dear Oracle Rdb Customer:

It has been almost 10 years now since Oracle purchased the Rdb family of products from Digital Equipment Corporation.  In those ten years, Oracle has consistently supported Rdb customers by developing new technologies for better performance, better management and better interoperability with other Oracle products.  As further evidence of the investment Oracle is making in Rdb, I'm pleased to announce the opening of the Oracle Rdb version 7.2 Beta Test Program.  With this release, Rdb adds support for it's third hardware architecture, HP Integrity servers running OpenVMS for Itanium®.

To join the program, you can register online at the Rdb Beta Test Page.  Once your registration application has been submitted, our Beta Program Administrator will review it for approval.  When you log back in to the site after being approved, you will see a page welcoming you to the program and links for the documentation and software download.

The first kit available for testing is an Advanced Developer's Kit (ADK) version of Oracle Rdb version 7.2.  This ADK allows Oracle Rdb based applications to be compiled, linked and executed on OpenVMS for Itanium®.  The applications should then access Rdb databases on Alpha based systems using Rdb's standard Remote Access feature. While the ADK does not officially support accessing local Itanium Rdb databases, the capability for such access is included as part of the ADK. Officially supported full native Itanium Rdb access will be available for testing in the first quarter of calendar year 2005. With the ADK you will be able to completely port and test your applications running on Itanium processors

Oracle/CDD repository users can also remotely access their Alpha-resident metadata definitions when using the ADK.

The ADK kit includes I64 native versions of,

    • SQL Module Language
    • SQLPRE for C, Cobol, Fortran, and Pascal
    • RDBPRE for Cobol, Fortran, and Basic
    • RDML Precompilers for C and Pascal
    • Rdb Remote Access
    • Oracle/CDD Repository Remote Access (available as a separate download)

A "pre-beta" version of Oracle CODASYL DBMS Release 7.2 is also available for download under the Oracle Rdb 7.2 Beta Test Program. This pre-beta kit is a fully functional I64 ported version of Oracle CODASYL DBMS. It is being offered for early adopters who are interested in getting a jump-start on the port of their DBMS applications to Itanium architecture-based HP Integrity servers. The Beta 1 version of Oracle CODASYL DBMS Release 7.2 is also scheduled for the first quarter of calendar year 2005.

The Beta Test Program for Rdb 7.2 is expected to continue through the third quarter of 2005. Participants will need to obtain beta versions of any needed I64 compilers as well as the OpenVMS Version 8.2 Field Test release, which is now available from HP's OpenVMS Field Test web site.  If your application requires DECforms, you’ll want to sign up for their beta test by sending e-mail to Jane.Kelley@HP.com.

While you are visiting the Rdb Beta Test Page you’ll notice that we are also seeking participants in beta tests of new versions of SQL/Services and the Native JDBC drivers for Rdb.

    • The SQL/Services beta test features enhanced support for two phase commit transactions between Oracle databases
and Rdb, support for the Oracle Call interface version 9.2.0.4 and a new Linux client.
    • The Native JDBC Drivers beta test features very significant performance and efficiency improvements, improved management using the SQL/Services management utility, better logging and Kanji and other multi-byte language support.

We look forward to welcoming you soon to any of these beta programs! To learn lots more about these and other planned enhancements to Oracle Rdb and the Rdb family of products, be sure to sign up for one of the upcoming Rdb Technical Forums near you.

Best Regards,
Kevin Duffy
