4. What to Do When You Receive a Bugcheck Dump File
Download the bugcheck summarizer (article 16546.1 in Metalink) and add this into your procedures. Check occasionally for updates for this utility.
The summarizer, for example may show:
- If the bugcheck was caused by a process quota or if simply a quota is low, it will highlight that. (see article 65352.1)
- If the bugcheck was caused by a corrupt index it may provide the name of that index with a recommended action.
- In the case of a corrupt index, confirmed by a verify, it may be necessary to drop and create the index minimizing system/application downtime. Of course, check Metalink later for fixes. If necessary contact the support center.
Use the output from the summarizer as the search criteria for Metalink searches. In particular, the exception identifier and the name of the routine in which it occured. For example,
Alpha OpenVMS 7.1, Oracle Rdb Server 7.0.2.1 produces a RDSBUGCHK.DMP file
COSI-F-BUGCHECK, internal consistency failure
Exception occurred at KODBND$FLUSH_TSNBLK_UPDATE + 000010F4
Called from KOD$COMMIT + 000006A8
Called from RDMS$$REMOVE_SYMBOL + 00001D68
Called from LIB$$CVT_MULH + 0000C1B0
Running image SQL$.EXE
use "BUGCHECK KODBND$FLUSH_TSNBLK_UPDATE".
Please consider performing an online backup prior to the index rebuild. If it is possible
to provide a copy then it may be extremely useful in diagnosing the problem.
4.1 If you do need to log a TAR use the output from the summarizer as it is designed to provide support with the most useful information needed to start with.
4.2 The summarizer can be used against Rdb, SQL, SQL/Services,DBMS, Oracle TRACE for Rdb and Replication for Rdb bugchecks.
4.3 If a bugcheck has been reported and you cannot locate it then please look in the following areas.
4.4 sys$login for the user who encountered it
4.5 RDM$BUGCHECK_DIR - a system wide logical
4.6 SYS$SYSTEM - recovery bugchecks are written there typically
4.7 For a further insight into bugchecks please read article 64926.1.

6. Processes Stuck in HIB (Hibernate)
If you are running Rdb on OpenVMS 7.3-1 (or -2) and start to see processes stuck in HIB or see "hibernating on AIJ submission" in RMU/SHOW STATISTICS, please contact HP and ask for relevant patches. If you are running Rdb 7.1.2.4, please contact Oracle Support.
7. Tips for Rdb
7.1 Need to get AIJ information for your database prior to Export/Import then try:
RMU/EXTRACT/ITEM=ALTER_DATABASE/OUT=file database
7.2 Useful trick entered onto the JCC listserver.
How to use "binary" characters like RS, GS, and FS :
$ fs[0,8] == %X1C
$ rs[0,8] == %X1E
$ gs[0,8] == %X1D
$ cr[0,8] == %X0D
$ lf[0,8] == %X0A
$ RMU/UNLOAD X FOO FOO.UNL /RECORD=(FILE:FOO, FORMAT=DELIMIT -
, SEPAR="''GS'" -
, TERMI="''RS'" -
, PREFIX="''FS'" -
, SUFFIX="''FS'" -
)
7.3 Need to understand about using shareable images then look at this HP web-site:
http://h71000.www7.hp.com/doc/73final/4548/4548pro_009.html
8. RWxxx Process states (RWAST).
Occasionally we see customers querying why a process is stuck in RWAST. Often there is little anyone can do to force it out of this state. The appropriate path is to contact HP and ask for them to analyze why the process is stuck in this Resource Wait state.
If want to understand and do more yourself trying surfing the net. There are hundreds of VMS articles out there.
Here's one I found:
