It is often necessary to apply the same change,
such as changing a logo or a report's logic, to a large, existing set
of reports. This requirement is especially critical in service hosting
environments where you want your customer to get the report in their
preferred layout using their corporate color scheme and logo. To achieve
this result, you would normally have to create different versions of
the same report for each customer. And, if you make changes to the base
report, you would have to modify each and every custom version.
OracleAS
Reports Services allows you to put these changes into an XML
definition and then either apply these at runtime or create different
reports in
batch out of one single master report. This technology also allows
your users to customize reports themselves. From changing boilerplate
objects
to storing the whole report definition in the XML file, everything
is possible.
This functionality represents a new way of custom
service hosting. Now you can easily provide your customer with reports
fitting their look-and-feel while still minimizing your costs for maintenance
and extensibility.
