Patrick Prepares With GIS—Military Geospatial Technology, October 12, 2006 (HTML)

The 45th Space Wing, headquartered at Patrick Air Force Base in Florida is using crisis management software and a newly developed damage assessment tool. The software enables the facility to meet 48-hour damage assessment requirements and helps responders identify where vital areas such as buildings/areas where people would likely be located.

The assessment system is the third integrated CAD/GIS implemented by the 45th Space Wing, using an Oracle Spatial database. Oracle Spatial's open architecture has enabled this integration helping eliminate stovepiping of data.

EDINA and Snowflake Software announce that academic users in higher and further education institutions now have access to Ordnance Survey MasterMap through the EDINA Digimap service.

The Army Corps of Engineers' Engineer Research & Development Center has been working with beta vesions of Oracle Database 11g to explore technologies which will be useful with programs under development by the Corps. For example, with Oracle 11g it will become possible for the Cold Regions Research Engineering Laboratory to store point cloud data as single objects which can be queried to do line-of-site, data point intensity or nearest neighbor calculations without moving the data out of the database.

Hull City Council's (HCC) iSMART based application is built on a foundation of trusted data residing in a single Oracle Spatial database. During recent flooding in the city eSpatial quickly extended the application to add flood information. A live feed of information relieved incident room pressure and allowed sharing of critical geographic information such as flooded or blocked street instantly with the public.

The Florida Turnpike Enterprise recognizes the need to migrate their data into Oracle Spatial to create a foundation for deploying enterprise-wide spatial information systems, then selects Leica ADE to provide web-based and wireless location-based applications. The comprehensive solution provides the same data access and analysis in that field as in the office while improving data currency and accuracy.

The GTAA Technical Data Center (TDC) creates and maintains building, site and utility information. The TDC chose Oracle Spatial as its primary spatial data store.

The Las Vegas Valley Water District AM/FM/GIS Division has modernized their CAD-GIS integration using Autodesk's Topobase with Oracle Spatial, eliminating 80% of their in-house customization. This paper by Keath Long and Matt Seidl covers the implementation of Topobase, used to enable facility management, as a replacement for the multiple in-house applications that previously enabled CAD-GIS integration. Various advanced features of Topobase will be explored, in addition to examples of how the open architecture behind Oracle Spatial and Spatial's native SQL capabilities allow for elegant interoperability solutions.  This implementation eliminated 80% of their in-house customization, enabled them to provide more accurate data to customers, and is expected to save costs significantly.
