ORACLE
WAREHOUSE BUILDER 10g Release 2
|
Oracle Warehouse Builder 10g Release 2 is a single, comprehensive tool for all aspects of data and metadata
management. It provides data quality, data auditing, fully integrated relational and dimensional modeling,
and full life cycle management of data and metadata. It supports data integration and management activities
including:
Providing extraction, transformation, and loading (ETL).
Consolidating data from disparate data sources.
Migrating data from legacy systems.
Data modeling of relational and dimensional structures
Designing and managing corporate metadata.
Cleaning data to provide quality information.
Profiling and auditing data quality.
The three main release themes are: |
 |
Enabling
Quality Information |
 |
Enabling
Business Intelligence |
 |
Enabling
Expertise Capture |
The major features
within these areas are:
 |
Data profiling. Warehouse Builder
now offers a complete data profiling and correction solution.
With data profiling, you can discover and measure defects in
your data prior to and during the process of creating your data
warehouse or BI application.
Once you profile your data, you can automatically derive
business rules and correction mappings to clean data, derive quality indices
such as Six Sigma, and use auditors to continuously monitor
data quality. This functionality ensures your data quality efforst are sustained and continuous. |

Relational and dimensional data object designer. Warehouse Builder introduces a new Data Object Editor to create, edit, and configure relational and dimensional data objects. This allows the data modeler to use a single interface regardless of whether the design asks for specialized dimensional objects or the latest partitioning features on tables.
As part of the extensions to the data object designer, advanced data type support is also added. Warehouse Builder now supports custom database types, varrays and nested tables. XML data types and Spatial data types are also handled and can be moved around via ETL. |

Complete slowly changing dimensions (Types I, II, III) support. Warehouse Builder fully supports slowly changing dimensions that store and manages both current and historical data over time in a data warehouse. Warehouse Builder allows you to design a dimension in any of the three types. Once designed ETL will transparently handle the data to adhere to the SCD type of the dimension. |

 |
Oracle OLAP integration. With the 10gR2 release Warehouse Builder extents the support for Oracle OLAP into modeling and direct maintenance utilizing the new OLAP features such as compressed cubes and partitioning. Warehouse Builder now allows you to directly load any source data into the OLAP option, eradicating the need of a temporary staging area for relational data. |

Transportable Modules. Enable youto extract
large amounts of data from remote Oracle databases while enjoying
highest performance possible. OWB’s Transportable Module feature
uses one of the mechanism in Oracle Database:
- Transportable Tablespace in 9i and 10g or
- Datapump in 10g only

Pluggable mappings. To save time and labor
when designing mappings, this new feature enables you to reuse
a mapping's data flow. You can create a pluggable mapping around
the portion of the flow you want to reuse. The pluggable mapping
is a reusable grouping of operators that has the advantages
of a single operator. You can publish pluggable mappings to
a library so that other designers can use them, or keep them
private. |

 |
Built-in scheduling. In the Paris release
you can define your own schedules in Warehouse Builder and associate
your executable objects with the schedules. You can associate
an executable object (such as a mapping or a process flow) with
a schedule. Upon deployment, Warehouse Builder deploys the schedule
into the database scheduler. Schedules are defined by Start
date and time, Schedule frequency, Repeat interval, Calendar
expression, End date and time. |

 |
Sophisticated Lineage and Impact
Analysis. Have been greatly enhanced to show impact
and lineage at the level of individual attributes, exploding
mappings, generating worst-case scenario diagrams, including
User-Defined objects created outside of OWB. Additionally you will have change propagation for ETL objects such as mappings, making change management even easier. |

|
 |
Business intelligence objects derivation.
Warehouse Builder enables you to derive and define Business
Intelligence (BI) objects that integrate seamlessly with Oracle's
Business Intelligence tools such as Discoverer and Business
Intelligence (BI) Beans. |

|
 |
Experts. Experts are solutions that enable
advanced users to design solutions that simplify routine or
complex tasks that end users perform in Warehouse Builder. You
can design these solutions in the Expert Editor which resembles
the Process Flow Editor and shares many of the same commands
and navigational tools. |

 |
User-defined objects and icons. Warehouse
Builder now offers complete support for user defined types including
objects, varrays, and nested tables. This enables you to use
more elaborate data storage and transaction formats such as
those used to support real-time data warehousing. |

 |
ERP Integration. With this new release of Warehouse Builder, a host of new features are added in the ERP integration area. Connectors for Oracle eBusiness Suite and PeopleSoft ERP are added to the product. These connectors allow you to import the metadata from the ERP systems in a way that makes business sense to the developers. Metadata is grouped in the approriate modules and business names are shown.
The SAP Connector is extended and now allows for variable substitution within ABAP and direct deployment and execution of the ABAP. To allow even better performance additional features are added. |

Security administration. Beginning with Oracle Warehouse Builder 10g, you can choose to apply no metadata security controls or define your own metadata security policy. You can define multiple users and apply full security or implement your own security strategy based on the Warehouse Builder security interface. |

Various Changes
- Simplified Install and Setup: In step with the Oracle Database 10g theme of ease of management, Warehouse Builder set up and installation procedures have been simplified. In many cases requiring a single repository to manage both runtime and design metadata.
- Unified metadata browser environment: All you metadata, whether runtime or design related can now be viewed from a single browser starting point
- OMB Extensions: By adding OMU commands you can now launch Warehouse Builder User Interface components from a scripted environment. See experts for more details.
- Certification: With Oracle Database 10gR2 being delivered, Warehouse Builder will be certified on both Oracle Database 10gR1 and 10gR2 and RAC for both versions.
