1.0 Overview
1.1 What is the Oracle
Warehouse Builder metadata integration solution
Starting from the Warehouse Builder version 9.2 it is possible to import
metadata from a number of third party tools by using the Metaintegration
Technology Inc. (MITI, www.metaintegration.net) technology, now seamlessly
integrated into OWB. It is now
possible to import metadata from a variety of third party tools into OWB by
using the MITI bridges. Warehouse Builder users can now reuse data model
designs developed by using a number of third party tools.

2.0 Features and Benefits
1.1 What are the main benefits for the Oracle Warehouse Builder users?
Medium to large IT
organizations often employ tools from different vendors for data model
design, extraction, transformation and loading (ETL) and reporting. This is
done for a variety of reasons (legacy dependencies, best of breed
configurations etc.) and can lead to metadata integration issues. Often,
design work done in one tool is not completely reusable in the other, if at
all. By introducing the metadata
integration solution that uses the MITI bridges, it is possible to move
metadata from a number of third party tools to Warehouse Builder.

3.0 Installation and Configuration
3.1 How to
obtain the MITI bridges?
The
MITI bridges can be purchased and downloaded from the MITI web site
(www.metaintegration.net ). A free trial version of all the bridges is also
available. The trial version has all the functionalities available in the
full version but limits the number of metadata objects (tables, views etc.)
that can be moved to 10.
3.2 How to
install and configure the MITI bridges with Warehouse Builder?
a. Download the necessary bridges from the MITI site
and install them on your PC. The installation consists of the installation
file download and setup execution (for more details, please refer to the MITI
instructions).
b. Start the Warehouse Builder design client
application and log on to the design repository
c. Click on the Project->Import MetaData->Bridge
menu.
d. A metadata import wizard page appears and all the
bridges installed in step a. automatically show up under the source (From)
dropdown list. In other words, Warehouse Builder detects the presence of the
MITI bridges on the user’s PC automatically.
For
a click-by-click presentation, see the Warehouse Builder-MITI viewlet on the
otn.oracle.com site.
3.3 How are
MITI bridges typically used with Warehouse Builder?
The
user will typically export the design done in the third party tool into a
file (various tools have different proprietary file formats for metadata
export). This file will then be imported in OWB by using the procedure
described in the previous chapter under step d.
3.4 How to
understand which bridges are needed to integrate a specific tool with
Warehouse Builder?
At
a minimum, it is necessary to have:
-
An import bridge from the file generated by the third party tool to
into the MITI application
-
An export bridge from the MITI application to the target tool format.
For Warehouse Builder, the target format will be CWM (Common Warehouse
Metamodel).
See
the pricing web site (http://www.metaintegration.net/Products/Pricing.html)
for more details on typical configurations and the pricing related pricing
models.
3.5 What
MITI bridge version is supported by Warehouse Builder?
Version
3.1.2 and higher. As mentioned, this feature is available for the Warehouse
Builder versions 9.2 and higher.
3.6 On what
platforms is this solution available?
This
solution is currently available to customers that use the Warehouse Builder
design client on a MS Windows platform (NT, Windows 2000 and Windows XP).
3.7 What
tools are currently supported?
Some of the most commonly
used tools for which MITI bridges to Warehouse Builder are available are:
- CA ERWin ® (3.0
or higher)
- Sybase PowerDesigner ® (6.1
and higher)
- IBM Rational Rose
Data Modeller ®
(various versions)
- Microsoft Visio ® (various
versions)
For a complete
up to date list, please refer to the MITI web site:
http://www.metaintegration.net/Products/MIMB/SupportedTools.html
3.8 Is it
possible to use the same technology to export metadata from Warehouse Builder
to third party tools?
It
is, but the user will have to use MITI’s user interface to do it. While the
import of metadata from other tools into Warehouse Builder (inbound) is
seamlessly integrated into Warehouse Builder’s user interface, the export
from Warehouse Builder to other tools (outbound) will have to be done as
follows:
-
Export the Warehouse Builder’s metadata to a CWM
file (by selecting the Export Metadata option from the Project menu in
Warehouse Builder).
-
Import the metadata downloaded from the Warehouse
Builder to the third party tool by using the MITI’s own graphical user
interface.
The
Warehouse Builder team plans to include this feature in the tool’s user
interface in one of the next major releases.

4.1 Where do
I go for support?
MITI will provide support directly. MITI bridges do not fall under any
