Note: Visual
Studio 2005 Express Edition is not supported with the Oracle Developer Tools. However, ODP.NET
*is* supported with Visual Studio 2005 Express Edition. For more information,
read the online
Oracle Developer Tools for Visual Studio .NET release notes.
-
Oracle Database Extensions for .NET, a database option of Oracle Database 10g,
can only be upgraded with this ODAC release. You must already have Oracle
Database Extensions for .NET 10.2.0.1.0 installed and configured on the Oracle
Server machine in the same Oracle Home where Oracle Database Extensions for
.NET 10.2.0.2.20 will be installed. For more information, read the
Oracle Database Extensions for .NET Installation Guide.
Installation Instructions
======================================================
1. Download ODAC10202.exe or ODTwithODAC10202.exe into a temporary folder. Please
note: Do not download this file into the "Tmp" directory.
2. Unzip its contents by running the executable.
3. Run the Oracle Universal Installer (OUI) by launching the setup.exe within
the "install" directory that was unzipped.
4. OUI will lead you through the installation on your machine. After the
installation, you may delete ODAC10202.exe and the temporary installation
folders and files.
5. A Net service name allows an Oracle client to use a simple alias to connect
to the database server. The alias definition contains all the information
needed to create a connection. To create an alias, launch Net Configuration
Assistant from Windows Start Menu --> All Programs --> Oracle -
<Oracle Home> --> Configuration and Migration Tools. Follow these
instructions to create a net service name as a shortcut for the data
source value in your connection string.
6. Installing the Oracle Developer Tools for Visual Studio .NET into an
Oracle8, Oracle9, or Oracle 10.1 Oracle home is not supported. By default, the
Oracle Installer will create a new Oracle 10.2 Oracle home. For more
information, read the online
Oracle Developer Tools for Visual Studio .NET release notes.
7. If you wish to upgrade Oracle Database Extensions for .NET, please follow
the online
Oracle Database Extensions for .NET Installation Guide.
Installation Notes for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008
======================================================
32-bit ODAC 10.2.0.2.21 support 32-bit Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008. This section
provides installation steps and notes for support for both these operating systems.
Oracle Database 10g Release 2 (10.2.0.3.0) for Microsoft Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 does not include
the following ODAC products:
Oracle Data Provider for .NET 2.0 (ODP.NET)
Oracle Database Extensions for .NET 2.0 (ODE)
Oracle Developer Tools for Visual Studio 2005 (ODT)
Products listed above should be installed from ODAC 10.2.0.2.21.
Install all other ODAC products from Oracle Database 10g Release 2 (10.2.0.3)
for Microsoft Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 instead of ODAC 10.2.0.2.21 as the former contains the newer versions.
Follow these installation steps for Windows Vista:
1. Install
Oracle Database Client (10.2.0.3.0) for Microsoft Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008.
2. Download ODAC1020221.exe or ODTwithODAC1020221.exe and unzip its contents by
running the executable.
3. Run the Oracle Universal Installer (OUI) by launching setup.exe from the
"install" directory that was unzipped in Step 2.
4. On the OUI screen named "Specify Home Details" choose the same Oracle Home as in
the Step 1 and proceed.
5. Install Oracle Database 10g Release 2 (10.2.0.4.0) Patch Set. This patch can be downloaded from Oracle Metalink.
Follow these installation steps for Windows Server 2008:
1. Install 32-bit
Oracle Database Client (10.2.0.3.0) for Microsoft Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008.
2. Download ODAC1020221.exe or ODTwithODAC1020221.exe and unzip its contents by
running the executable.
3. Use the Oracle 10.2.0.3 installer to install Oracle Data Access Components (10.2.0.2.21). Do not use ODAC's installer.
ODAC products should be installed in the same Oracle Home as Oracle Database or Client 10.2.0.3.0. To install ODAC 10.2.0.2.21 using the Oracle 10.2.0.3 installer, execute:
setup.exe use_prereq_checker=false
from a command prompt from within the following directory:
%ORACLE_HOME%\oui\bin
4. On the "Specify Source Location" screen during this installation process, select the ODAC 10.2.0.2.21installer's products.xml file located in the "stage" directory.
5. Install Oracle Database 10g Release 2 (10.2.0.4.0) Patch Set. This patch can be downloaded from Oracle Metalink.
Common Install and Setup Issues
======================================================
1. Consult the release notes first for any known issues or limitations.
2. Check to see if the Oracle data access components were properly downloaded
by comparing the download size to the one listed on the download page.
3. If you have more than one Oracle Home installed on the same machine (e.g.
Oracle9i Release 2 client and Oracle10g Release 1 client), by
installing the Oracle 10.2.0.1 client, OUI will establish this client as the
Oracle Home all your existing applications will use. For more information on
using Multiple Oracle Homes on Windows and changing homes, consult the
ODP.NET FAQ.
4. It's highly recommended that ODP.NET be installed to a new Oracle Home.
Installing ODP.NET on top of an existing Oracle home may break existing Oracle
applications. This installation contains ODP.NET 10.2.0.2 and Oracle Client
10.2.0.1.
5. This installation creates policy configuration files that can redirect
existing 9.2, 10.1, and 10.2 ODP.NET applications to the current ODP.NET
version. The policy files are located in the
ORACLE_HOME\odp.net\PublisherPolicy\1.x directory. These policy files will not
be placed in the Global Assembly Cache (GAC) by the Oracle installer.
Application developers can decide whether to GAC them or not.
6. Installing ODP.NET into a new Oracle Home means that you will not have
access to any of the Oracle Data Source aliases from your previous
installation. To be able to use these existing data source attributes, copy the
tnsnames.ora file in the ORACLE_HOME\network\admin directory from your previous
Oracle Home installation to the same directory in your new installation. Or you
may create the connection aliases manually by following
these instructions in the ODP.NET Developer's Guide.
Consult Chapter 2 of the ODP.NET Developers Guide for further
information on ODP.NET versioning.
Viewing the ODP.NET Documentation
======================================================
The PDF documentation is installed in the ORACLE_HOME\odp.net\doc directory. To
view the PDF documentation, open the documentation from the Start Menu -->
Oracle - <Oracle Home> --> Application Development. The HTML
documentation is installed in the ORACLE_HOME\odp.net\doc\html directory.
Additionally, the ODP.NET API documentation is installed as part of Visual
Studio .NET Dynamic Help.
