Grand Prize Winner (North America)
Brian Emmett
Emmett, 30, of Mountain View, Calif., is a senior software developer at Stryker Corp.'s Endoscopy division in South San Jose. Born in Herndon, Va., Emmett's passion for space and space technology was evident as early as intermediate school, when his family enrolled him in Space Camp in Huntsville, Ala. There the rambunctious youth experienced centrifugal force, participating in mission control simulations and donning a space suit to replicate Shuttle Extra-Vehicular Activities (EVAs), which fueled his enthusiasm for space adventure. His family nurtured his interest with regular pilgrimages to the NASA- Kennedy Space Center to watch the launches of NASA Space Shuttles.
Emmett graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) in 1998 with a degree in Computer Science. Prior to graduation, Emmett's first foray into the world of outer space and technology was an internship with Boeing, which had him working in NASA's Office of Life and Microgravity Sciences at NASA headquarters in Washington, D.C. Emmett decided his niche was as a software developer and maintained that course while fanning his passion for outer space as a hobby. Emmett enjoys hiking, mountain biking, photography, good food, and good wine.
Update (29-Jan-2007): Brian has decided to forfeit the Grand Prize for personal reasons. We'll announce a new Grand Prize winner shortly.
Grand Prize Winner (Asia/Pacific)
Huh Jae-min
"Winning the grand prize was 90% of pure luck. But I guess luck flows if
you try hard enough on something."
Huh Jae-min, a Computer Science student at Ulsan University (Busan, Republic of Korea), has won
the lifetime opportunity of going into space by winning an Oracle Space
Sweepstakes Grand Prize.
"I happened to came across the Oracle Space Sweepstakes while I was surfing the
Web. I decided to enter this event with the hope that the quiz would help
me in my studies, and also with a faint hope of space travel." Huh adds,
"The questions were harder than I thought. So I had to consult reference
books and discuss them with my friends."
"I guess I will not be
able to sleep easily, imagining the view of earth from
outer space," says Huh. "In preparing for space travel, I also may have to work
hard on my English skills."
He also comments, "Being a space traveler is one thing. But after that, I
will work even harder on my studies!"
