Oracle Database Plugin for Eclipse Data Tools Platform Project
Statement of Direction

Oracle Database Plugin for Eclipse Data Tools Platform (DTP) Project allows you to work with the Oracle Database within the Eclipse Platform. It extends and uses DTP to connect and work with Oracle database objects. DTP provides a set of extensible, vendor-neutral frameworks for using data sources (defining driver templates, making connections, getting data and so on). A number of subprojects have been defined for this project including Connectivity, Enablement, Model Base and SQL Development Tools. The purpose of the Enablement subproject is to provide specialized support built on DTP core extension points and API. Oracle’s focus is on this Enablement subproject.

As of March 2007, Oracle has raised its membership level with the Eclipse Foundation to become a Strategic Developer and Board Member of the Eclipse Foundation.

Why Oracle Database Plugin for Eclipse DTP?

Oracle Database Plugin for Eclipse provides a DTP compliant access to Oracle Database from the Eclipse Platform. This way an end user can have the same set of features to access Oracle Database as they would have with other data sources from within the Eclipse Platform. The user can also use tools such as Business Intelligence and Reporting Tools (BIRT) and the Web Tools Platform (WTP) (with the Eclipse Europa release) to work with the Oracle Database.

Oracle Database Plugins for Eclipse DTP

Oracle Database Plugin for Eclipse DTP 1.0 - Early Adopter Release

This version will support the Eclipse DTP 1.0 to provide connection to the Oracle Database (Oracle 9iR2 and Oracle10g), navigate through database objects and provide basic SQL editing capabilities such as syntax coloring, content assist, executing SQL statements etc. More details of the Eclipse DTP 1.0 release can be found at DTP Wiki site (1.0 Project Plan). This release will be a binary only distribution and will include Oracle’s JDBC driver.

Oracle Database Plugin for Eclipse DTP 1.5

This release will be an updated early adopter release for DTP 1.5 which is being released as part of the Eclipse Europa release. It will be released after the Eclipse Europa release and its focus will be to ensure compatibility by conforming to the changes made to Eclipse DTP features for DTP 1.5. The SQL Editor will support more keywords. More details of Eclipse DTP Europa (1.5) release can be found at DTP Wiki Site (1.5 Project Plan). This release will be a binary only distribution and will include Oracle’s JDBC driver.

Join Eclipse Data Tools Project (DTP) as a Contributor

With these early adopter releases we intend to solicit feedback from the Oracle community and the open source community in general on providing Oracle support to DTP. We have established a forum on OTN to provide a means for this feedback to be collected and allow Oracle to respond. Assuming a positive level of interest from the community, we would seek to formally join the DTP project for the purpose of contributing to the Connectivity, Model Base, SQL Development Tools and particularly the Enablement subproject to provide specialized support for the Oracle Database.

Subsequent Releases

When Oracle formally joins the DTP project as a contributor, Oracle will submit our code for inclusion into DTP. Further releases of Oracle support would then become available as part of future releases of DTP. By making these contributions, the source code of the Oracle Database Plugin for Eclipse DTP would be available.
