This section explains the recommended database migration path that should be followed when using the services available from the Oracle Product Technical Services (PTS) group.

Follow the steps outlined below to perform your migration according to the recommended migration path. Please read through all steps as you will find useful links here for each phase of your migration project:

1 - Install and Set Up the Hardware for your Oracle Database 10g

Refer to the Oracle Database 10g documentation for detailed information about hardware requirements.

2 - Download and Install an Oracle Database 10g

Perform an Enterprise or Client database download depending on your requirements. A Client installation is sufficient for those machines that only need to access the Oracle Database 10g server instance. Both Enterprise and Client versions can be downloaded here.

3 - Download and Install OMWB and AMA

• Oracle Migration Workbench (OMWB)
  OMWB automatically migrates your database data, schema, triggers, views, stored procedures, and other database objects to an Oracle database.

  Note: Make sure to install the plug-in for the database you want to migrate in addition to the Migration Workbench software.
  

• Oracle JDeveloper Application Migration Assistant (AMA)
  AMA helps to identify the SQL in your application code that will need to be modified in order to work with an Oracle database.

4 - Download Presentations and Documentation

Download the following presentations and documents to help you understand Oracle architecture, technical issues, the scope of the migration, and the recommended migration methodology:

• Oracle Architecture Presentation - Outlines the Oracle architecture and its main components. Lists the structures involved in connecting a user to an Oracle instance.

• High-Level Migration Presentation - Explains why to use Oracle and introduces the migration methodology, migration tools, typical migration timeframes, etc.

• Technical Migration Presentation - Compares Oracle to other RDBMS products, highlights things to watch out for, and includes a Tips and Tricks presentation.

• T-SQL to PL/SQL Comparison Document - Compares T-SQL and PL/SQL syntax (specifically for Sybase SQL Server and Microsoft SQL Server migrations.)
  

5 - Train your Staff

It is recommended that your staff refer to the following training materials to help them get started in an Oracle environment:

• Migration Methodology Roles and Responsibilities - Explains the migration phases and the activities and resources relevant to each phase.
  

• Training recommendations document - Explains the recommended training for a DBA who is new to Oracle.
  

• New to Oracle - An area on the Oracle Technology Network (OTN) Web site dedicated to technical folks who are new to Oracle.

6 - Download PTS Service Request Form

Download this document to sign up for the Migration Services for Partners offered by the Product Technology Services (PTS) group in Oracle.

7 - Download Technical Migration Questionnaires

Dowload the appropriate Technical Migration Questionnaires from the following list so that an assessment/estimate can be completed for your migration project:

• Microsoft SQL Server
• Sybase
• Informix
• IBM DB2, MySQL or any other database platform

8 - Send Questionnaires to Oracle

Send the completed Service Request Form and the Technical Migration Questionnaire to the appropriate address (names on Migration Services Request Questionnaire document).

9 - Review Assessment, Scope, and Estimating Examples and Templates

Using the information you provided in the questionnaires, a PTS representative will create and send you an estimation document that includes an estimated timeframe for the migration project as well as the main steps required to complete the migration. In the meantime, you may find it useful to review the following documents:

• Assessment Spreadsheet - Allows you to calculate your own estimate.

• Sample Assessment Report - Download this PDF file.

• Sample Microsoft Project Plan (MPP file) - For Microsoft SQL Server migrations.

• Four sample high-level SQL Server estimate documents - Use these as examples of how long your Microsoft SQL Server migration may take.

10 - Start the Migration

Use the following tools and services to begin your migration:

• Oracle Migration Workbench
• Oracle JDeveloper Application Migration Assistant
• Oracle Migration Services Overview
• Third-Party Migration Providers

11 - Use Migration Support Resources

If you run into any difficulties during your migration project, use the following resources to find solutions to your problems:

• Migration Discussion Forums - Subscribe to the forums and get hints and tips from migration experts.
  

• Migration Knowledge Base - Check out the repository of common technical issues encountered during migration projects and find out how to perform particular technical tasks in Oracle. The Knowledge Base also includes sample "before and after" code and is updated on an ongoing basis.
  

• Oracle Metalink - Search the entire Oracle Support database.
