When determining the best modernization option, one of the options available is to replace the legacy application with a commercial-off-the-shelf
package. Due to shared cost of COTS development, this is clearly an option when a COTS package exists that can replace the legacy functionality.
COTS Replacement achieves a new level when the COTS package makes extensive use of SOA by allowing the various COTS components to be accessed as
SOA services. In this case, individual COTS components can be used to replace legacy application components. These components can then be scripted
together with other modernized components that have made use of other modernization techniques using industry standard orchestration engines based
on standards such as Business Process Execution Language (BPEL).
