ABC Aerolíneas Optimizes Project Methodology, Provides Detailed Project Monitoring to Decision-Makers

ABC Aerolíneas S.A. de C.V. (Interjet) is a Mexican airline with the goal of providing highly efficient service at the lowest possible cost. It started its Mexican operations in 2005 and has added international routes to Central America, the Caribbean, and North America, serving 25 domestic destinations and eight international destinations with 37 planes, in a very competitive market.

Since it was founded, Interjet has managed projects, ranging from opening up new routes; to adding new planes; to starting new business units at airports, such as service centers that provide maintenance services to other airlines.

Challenges

A word from ABC Aerolíneas S.A. de C.V.

  • “We’ve used Oracle’s Primavera P6 Enterprise Project Portfolio Management to manage 48 projects, of which 38 are completed and 10 are in progress. Oracle’s solution provides better analysis and control, and shows us each task’s progress as well as relationships between various tasks, so we can meet our goals and deadlines.” – Carlos Núñez Brambila, Director, Project Office, ABC Aerolíneas S.A. de C.V.

  • Automate and optimize managing the company’s rapidly growing project portfolio to ensure on-time and on-budget delivery for initiatives, such as launching new routes and planes
  • Improve methodology to accelerate project development through better control and monitoring
  • Consolidate and get full use from project information—such as regarding building hangars and opening aviation simulation centers—by unifying information in a single platform for one view of each project to accelerate decision-making

Solutions

  • Implemented Oracle’s Primavera P6 Enterprise Project Portfolio Management and Oracle Database to optimize projects, such as adding a new airline route, and achieved 100% efficiency in project control
  • Automated core project management processes, such as structuring work plans, choosing critical routes, assigning the right staff to the right areas according to their expertise, projecting planned completion dates, recording actual completion dates, and adding task-related documentation—which improved project control with the additional benefit of companywide alerts regarding task progress
  • Enabled tracking each project stage, detecting and addressing potential problems earlier to ensure on-time project completion
  • Reduced the average time needed to open a new airport destination thanks to improved flexibility in project control and management
  • Enabled Interjet to develop a roadmap for generating projects and helped it meet the requirements of each plane, domestic and international destination, operating station, and mechanical workshop, accelerating project development with all necessary controls
  • Automatically generated preventive alerts for potential project delays, speeding detection and correction of errors that could result in delays
  • Consolidated specifications for various projects and other details in Oracle Database, improving access and the ability to fully exploit information gathered from all project participants
  • Eliminated the risk of losing data, thanks to the program’s security, reliability, backup capability, and 99.999% availability

Why Oracle

Interjet was looking for a tool that would enable it to improve its project management, from project launches to tasks each department needed to perform, including the goals and schedules for all stages. “After evaluating several tools, we chose Primavera P6 Enterprise Project Portfolio Management and Oracle Database, Enterprise Edition as an information repository solution, because this would enable us to optimize our project methodology and gain a unified view of the status of each project, while still providing the detail needed to make the best decisions,” said Carlos Nuñez Brambila, director, project office, ABC Aerolíneas S.A. de C.V.

Implementation Process

Interjet began implementing Primavera P6 Enterprise Project Portfolio Management and Oracle Database with Oracle Partner Systec S.A. de C.V. in February 2011. “At the same time we implemented the solution, we trained 10 users, and we finished the deployment in two months,” Nuñez said.

By the end of March, 2011, Interjet was managing projects with Primavera P6 Enterprise Project Portfolio Management as the only solution to manage control projects. The company finished the implementation, on time and on budget.

Partner

Interjet deployed P6 Enterprise Project Portfolio Management and Oracle Database with help from Oracle partner Systec. “Based on what we wanted to develop, Systec specialists analyzed our training, infrastructure, and project modeling needs to better exploit the tool,” Nuñez said.

“With the Oracle solution and training from Systec, we can now fulfill all our planning and project tracking needs and migrate to the web application to get statistics and reports,” Nuñez said.
