ACRE MCC Makes Employees up to 40% More Efficient with Integrated Identity Management and Authentication System

ACRE Coking & Refractory Engineering Consulting Corporation, MCC is an engineering company offering project management and contracting services, including technology consulting, designing, and procurement; construction supervision; equipment assembly and research; and manufacturing and engineering services. The company has worked on hundreds of projects at midsize-to-large coking and refractory plants worldwide, including Brazil, India, Iran, Japan, and South Africa. Its main shareholder is China Metallurgical Group Corporation (MCC).

ACRE MCC had implemented a number of IT applications and systems to meet the needs of its growing project management and construction business, but using so many applications was inconvenient for staff and complicated user identity and authorization management. ACRE MCC implemented Oracle Internet Directory, Oracle Access Manager, Oracle Identity Manager, and Oracle Enterprise Single Sign-On Suite Plus to integrate user identity information from various IT platforms—including Oracle E-Business Suite enterprise resource planning (ERP) and human resource (HR) systems and a third-party e-mail application—into an automated identity management and authorization system.

The system provided a single sign-on to various project management and document applications; ensured local and international employees working at construction sites used IT systems safely, stably, and efficiently; increased employee efficiency by up to 40%; and reduced IT operation and maintenance costs by 30% per year.

Challenges

A word from ACRE Coking & Refractory Engineering Consulting Corporation, MCC

  • “By using Oracle’s industry-leading identity management products to consolidate our user identity and authorization information, we reduced data security risks. We also increased employee efficiency by up to 40% and cut IT operation and maintenance costs by 30% a year.” – Wang Xianbo, Director, Computer and Information Center, ACRE Coking & Refractory Engineering Consulting Corporation, MCC

  • Integrate user identity information from Oracle ERP and HR systems, and a third-party e-mail application, to enhance the efficiency and security of engineering and construction projects and contractor information
  • Reduce high IT operation and maintenance costs caused by managing different sign-ons and user authentication information for separate systems
  • Ensure employees working at local and international construction sites are properly authenticated and can access internal and external networks and IT systems quickly and conveniently
  • Create a unified employee identity lifecycle management system that is integrated with the HR system to help standardize identity management and authorization strategies

Solutions

  • Reduced IT operation and maintenance costs 30% per year by centralizing identity and authorization management for various project management and document applications
  • Increased staff efficiency by 40% for completing IT operation and maintenance tasks
  • Enhanced security, flexibility, and efficiency of user authorization processes, by establishing centralized, customized, policy- and role-based authorization approvals and controls
  • Raised employee productivity by more than 20%, as they only have to sign on with their user name and password once
  • Improved IT access for employees working onsite at engineering and construction projects by implementing a two-step U-Key and password user-authentication process
  • Automatically approved access to various applications for new employees within 24 hours, using user authorization from the HR system rather than seeking management approval for each application
  • Eliminated the risk of unauthorized access by employees who have moved roles or left the company, by ensuring information about account authorization, employment status, and position changes is 100% accurate
  • Increased IT security and staff accountability by using an auditing function to see in real time which members of staff are using different applications and when they are using them

Why Oracle

To find the most appropriate software for its unified identity management and authentication system, ACRE MCC researched several identity management and access control products, including IBM Tivoli. However, the company found that Oracle’s identity management applications were leaders in its field.

“We chose Oracle’s identity management products as they had the best reputation and would provide us with the greatest number of benefits,” said Wang Xianbo, director of the computer and information center, ACRE Coking & Refractory Engineering Consulting Corporation, MCC. “Oracle also has an excellent implementation team that provided rigorous and technically accomplished implementation services.”

Implementation Process

ACRE MCC engaged Oracle Partner Datang Software Technologies Co., Ltd. (CATTSoft) to help design and implement its unified identity management and authentication system.

“CATTSoft helped us deploy a central directory server based on Oracle Internet Directory to centralize our user identity information,” said Xianbo. “We implemented Oracle Identity Manager to synchronize the identity information from various application systems using the application’s built-in connector. We also used Oracle Enterprise Single Sign-On Suite Plus to provide a single sign-on for our document system.”

The implementation began in May 2011 and went live just three months later in August 2011.

Partner

CATTSoft spent time evaluating ACRE MCC’s IT structure, its business requirements, and its current user identity management system.

“We chose CATTSoft for the company’s profound knowledge of Oracle products and its rich experience with related identity management projects,” said Xianbo. “CATTSoft’s engineers showed their expertise and commitment to our project from the start. They worked hard to understand our needs, which gave us a lot of confidence in the quality of their services.”
