Adaptive TechSoft Serves Higher Education Institutions, Leveraging Engineered Systems’ Superior Performance

Adaptive TechSoft (ATS), established in the early 1990s, develops integrated systems and applications to meet the information technology needs of regional markets by providing integrated solutions for healthcare organizations, such as hospitals and health insurance companies, and higher education institutions, such as universities and colleges. ATS has achieved the Exadata Optimized status, certified by Oracle's value added distributor Avnet Technology Solutions Middle East & Africa.

ATS, whose applications are used throughout the Middle East, needed to consolidate commodity servers with different operating systems, applications, and technical specifications to ensure high performance of online transaction processing (OLTP) in hosted and consolidated scenarios, as well as to provide a reliable and scalable system infrastructure for eRegister, the company's university information management system. ATS conducted benchmark testing at Oracle partner Avnet’s Exadata solution center in Dubai, connecting 10,000 concurrent users to the company's eRegister 5.0 application, deployed on Oracle Exadata Database Machine with Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud and Oracle WebCenter Portal. The benchmark demonstrated that up to 100,000 educational institution users can be served simultaneously, without noticeable effect on system performance.

Challenges

A word from Adaptive TechSoft (ATS)

  • “Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud and Oracle Exadata Database Machine are the perfect solutions to serve our healthcare and education customers. They enable us to serve small communities as well as large institutions with up to 100,000 users without any performance degradation. With powerful consolidation capabilities for storage systems, servers, and applications alike, Oracle's Engineered Systems provide a rapid return on investment.” – Mahmoud Yaseen, Professional Services Manager, Adaptive TechSoft (ATS)

  • Consolidate commodity servers with different operating systems, applications, and technical specifications onto one engineered system to ensure high OLTP performance in hosted and consolidated scenarios for healthcare and education customers
  • Provide a reliable and scalable system infrastructure for eRegister, the company's university information management system, to enable educational institutions to consolidate information from an array of sources and provide students, faculty, and staff with personalized, role-based self-service and single-sign-on access to campus services
  • Serve up to 100,000 educational institutions users simultaneously—students, faculty staff, administration staff, and decision-makers—without noticeable effects on system performance

Solutions

  • Ensured that the eRegister application will work seamlessly on Oracle Exadata Database Machine with Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud and Oracle WebCenter Portal by conducting benchmark testing at Oracle partner Avnet’s Exadata solution center with 10,000 concurrent users and processing their simultaneous transactional operations against an OLTP database, with resulting high performance and complete stability
  • Used Oracle Exadata Database Machine and Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud to provide customers of eRegister 5.0—which supports reporting for learning, teaching, financial, and office administration, and consolidates reporting for regional universities, colleges, and schools—with a state-of-the-art student system that is scheduled to serve up to 100,000 users in a paperless IT environment
  • Optimized user experience for students, faculty, and administrative staff with 5x to 10x better performance than the previous environment, even during peak-connection periods
  • Provided more than 100 e-services—such as online admission, course registration, graduation records, student transcripts, absence records, academic transactions, and financial allowances—while integrating and enabling high-performance e-services from third-party applications, like e-learning and library systems
  • Reduced total cost of ownership by reducing storage capacity by 50%, compared to the previous storage server running on Sun UNIX
  • Introduced management tools for unattended operation and best practices to reduce database administration resource requirements and operational costs, enabling the university to manage the databases consolidated in Oracle Exadata Database Machine and Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud with just one administrator
  • Eliminated human error when implementing the company's software products on Oracle's engineered systems, which, during deployment, do not require the use of installation variables to control directories into which files are installed
  • Enabled educational institutions to scale linearly from Oracle Exadata Database Machine Quarter Rack to Half Rack as business grows, making the Oracle Exadata investment a viable business case even for smaller institutions with a few thousand students

Why Oracle

“We have partnered with Oracle for 20 years and all of our applications are based on Oracle technology. In Avnet's solution center, we demonstrated that Oracle's Engineered Systems are the superior choice for public institutions that serve several thousand users in transaction-heavy environments,” said Mahmoud Yaseen, professional services manager, Adaptive TechSoft (ATS).
