Aerolab S.r.l. specializes in automotive and aerodynamic testing for race cars. Founded in 2003 through a joint venture between FondTech and Dallara Automobili, Aerolab is now a wholly owned subsidiary of FondTech. The company creates scale models of racing vehicles that it tests in its wind tunnel—a 1,100 square-meter state-of-the-art facility. Aerolab can accommodate up to a 60% scale model for Formula 1 automobiles and up to a 50% scale model for enclosed wheel models.

To meet its clients’ needs for rapid and convenient access to model and aerodynamic testing data, Aerolab deployed Oracle AutoVue solutions. Aerolab can now easily share design and testing data with internal team members as well as clients, facilitating collaboration and eliminating the need for IT team members to intervene in this function. The solution, which enables team members and clients to view data regardless of which computer-aided design (CAD) software they are running, has also helped to reduce errors and cut paper consumption by 80%.

Challenges

A word from Aerolab S.r.l.

  • “In the world of auto racing, speed is paramount. This same tenet applies even before a car hits the racetrack. Oracle AutoVue visualization solutions enable us to meet our clients’ needs for rapid access to vital aerodynamic model and testing information.” – Marco Liboni, Information Technologies, Aerolab S.r.l.

  • Provide  members of different teams with direct access to the results of aerodynamic testing for specific vehicles, eliminating the need for IT team intervention in this process
  • Develop a single platform to share test data with customers, including racing teams
  • Leverage a single tool to manage different data  regardless of the customer’s CAD software platform
  • Minimize information duplication and format conversion to save time
  • Deploy a faster tool that does not require engineering or design skills to navigate and use
  • Apply a single methodology that offers the flexibility to accommodate the needs of many different types of users, like designers, engineers and technicians

Solutions

  • Worked with Oracle Partner Phylos S.r.l. to implement AutoVue Office, AutoVue 2D Professional, and AutoVue 3D Professional Advanced to quickly display customer data from the engineering, manufacturing, and model shop offices—in 2-D and 3-D format—through an integrated, Web-based tool enabling better and faster collaboration
  • Accelerated data consultations and processes while minimizing stops and interferences between offices
  • Used Oracle AutoVue to read 99% of customer documents in native CAD format
  • Reduced, across the company, paper consumption by 80% by digitally annotating comments to projects—both in document management and product lifecycle management (PLM)—through the Oracle AutoVue interface to Office and Project
  • Used Oracle AutoVue to identify data inaccuracies since the beginning of every projectand develop a direct information flow to the production and model assembly departments to reduce data errors by 80%
  • Provided a tool for measurement and assembly verification for all departments that do not use CAD software
  • Increased collaboration among Aerolab’s departments—for example between the technical, financial, and administrative departments—by providing project team members with direct, intuitive, and interactive access to company information, increasing productivity by 50%
  • Increased return on investment with a flexible solution that Aerolab can use across its customer base

Implementation Process

Aerolab deployed the AutoVue solutions on schedule, working with its implementation partner, Phylos.
