Aktia Provides Modern, Flexible Online Banking Services to Customers, Thanks to Efficient Integration Tools

  • Oracle Customer:  Aktia
    Location:  Helsinki, Finland
    Industry:  Financial Services
    Employees:  1,200
    Annual Revenue:  Over $5 Billion

Aktia is a Finnish financial services provider that offers a broad range of solutions for banking, asset management, insurance, and real estate services. Aktia serves approximately 350,000 customers through its 70 branch offices and comprehensive internet and telephone services.

Online banking is the most important channel for Aktia’s customer encounters. Having shared a legacy, online-banking platform with three other Finnish banks for 12 years, Aktia wanted to create a modern Web environment of its own to provide more advanced and flexible online services for its customers.

Aktia and its implementation partner Tieto chose Oracle Fusion Middleware and Oracle Database to build a reliable and standardized integration layer between the new, online banking and the legacy back-end systems. Aktia’s entire Web portal was updated, and the company has received a significant amount of positive feedback from its customers regarding the new online banking application.

Challenges

A word from Aktia

  • "Oracle Service Bus was an essential part of Aktia’s internet bank project, as otherwise we would not have been able to easily integrate our new online bank to a variety of back-end services and support the required security federation." – Juha Volotinen, Director, Internet Services, Aktia

  • Create a modern Web environment to provide more advanced and flexible services for the company’s online banking customers, who for the past 12 years had been served by a legacy, online-banking platform, shared between Aktia and three other Finnish banks
  • Build a reliable, efficient, and standardized integration layer between the new online bank and the legacy, back-end systems to enable 24/7 availability and seamless operation
  • Expand market share by providing outstanding online banking services

Solutions

  • Implemented Oracle Service Bus 11g and Oracle WebLogic Server 11g to provide a reliable, efficient, and standardized environment for integrating front-end and the back-end banking systems, thereby enabling reliable, efficient, and standardized services
  • Used the new online banking platform, which is based on Tieto’s eBanking Suite solution, to provide more advanced and convenient services, such as expanded search capabilities, to the company’s customers
  • Enabled the bank to seamlessly integrate customer information―even across enterprise borders―from different organizations belonging to Aktia, allowing the company to offer a 360-degree view to customers and staff
  • Increased customer satisfaction, which is reflected through positive feedback from customers about the new online banking application
  • Enabled the company to attract new customers with its advanced online-banking services, which according to internet and branch activity statistics, are the most important channel for Aktia’s customer encounters
  • Gained the ability to create and reuse IT services, developed via Oracle Service Bus, to launch a new sales, desktop application for Aktia’s branch offices that provides staff with more detailed background information about branch customers

Why Oracle

“We chose Oracle Service Bus because we had successfully used Oracle tools in our previous IT environment and because it was critical that we have compatibility in our IT environment for the sake of business continuity,” said Juha Volotinen, director, internet services, Aktia. “After a careful evaluation of other products available on the market, we determined that Oracle’s service bus was the most mature product on the market.”

Implementation Process

The implementation project took 18 months, and work involving Oracle Service Bus was done during all of this time. The project proceeded as planned, and the solution went live in January 2012.
