Department of Post Accelerates Restore and Write Speeds by 125% and Creates Archives 3x Faster with Modular Tape Storage

Department of Post is a broadcast television and film post-production finishing facility that provides sophisticated content, editing, and archive solutions to the New Zealand film and television industry. It services independent and network production companies and works on some of New Zealand’s most popular television programs.

A word from Department of Post

  • “We selected Oracle’s StorageTek SL150 modular tape library over Dell and HP for its ease of use, simple upgrade process, and low cost expandability to support our rapid growth. We now create archives 3x faster, have enabled remote access for our clients, and increased staff productivity.” – James Gardner, Director, Department of Post

  • Automate broadcast television and film backup and archiving processes instead of manually changing tapes every six to eight hours, increasing staff productivity and supporting rapid growth
  • Implement a simple, low-cost, and easy-to-use archive solution to enable remote upload by clients with minimal training
  • Enable rapid transfer and upload of large volumes of broadcast television and film for fast editing and program turnaround, capabilities required for daily television shows

Oracle Product and Services

  • Slashed archive completion time by 3x by automating tape loading, monitoring, and changeover processes by using Oracle’s StorageTek SL150 modular tape library, improving tape loading speed from a maximum of two tapes per day to five tapes per day
  • Accelerated restore and write speeds by up to 125%—from 4 GB per minute to up to 9 GB per minute—enabling rapid upload and backup of post-production broadcast television and film
  • Saved up to one hour of staff time per day by eliminating manual changing of tapes, enabling staff to focus on editing and broadcast television and film production services
  • Improved accuracy of data reporting for file backup status and completion by combining the modular tape library with Symantec Backup Exec
  • Provided clients with remote access capability to upload, restore, play, and share media by integrating a custom storage solution (which was named DIVA and designed by Oracle partner Group 6 Technologies) into StorageTek SL150 auto loader
  • Reduced storage capacity by consolidating multiple television and film libraries onto one server and utilizing storage management tools
  • Accelerated linear tape open job completion times by enabling the company to start archive processes remotely at any time, for example, over the weekend or out of office hours
  • Gained staff confidence in disaster recovery operations by enabling backup of 50 TB or larger television and film volumes, which were not possible previously due to time and storage space limitations
  • Executed large transactions and batch jobs including a 40 GB daily backup of critical project data, 12 TB backups of original camera media twice daily, and four-to-eight archive jobs a week of 2 to 4 TB each

Why Oracle

As television and film production schedules are fast paced, Department of Post needed a reliable, quality library to store, backup, and manage film on a rapid turnaround.

Department of Post selected Oracle’s StorageTek SL150 tape library over HP and Dell products for its ease of use, upgrade simplicity and low-cost expandability. It is also easy to install, operate, and remotely manage. It was important that the company be able to easily train clients in how to use the system and remotely upload or restore broadcast television and film for storage, editing, and archiving.

“We can now verify that all jobs have been backed up and archived. With the legacy system, we would only verify the most important jobs, as it was a time-consuming, manual, loading process. We have great confidence in the automated backup and archiving, and StorageTek SL150’s ability to archive large volumes of raw and post-production broadcast television and film from our clients, which include broadcasters, television and film companies, and production houses,” said James Gardner, director, Department of Post.

Implementation Process

Department of Post commissioned and received the StorageTek SL150 modular tape library in December 2012 and implemented it in January 2013. The implementation process was simple because the out-of-the-box, pre-engineered server was ready for immediate installation and use. Department of Post provided user training to key staff and completed the implementation on time and on budget.

Group 6 Technologies—a Department of Post software development partner—provided testing and support in pairing its customized server, DIVA, with StorageTek SL150 modular tape library to ensure integration of custom software and production tools.
