Challenges

A word from Elizabeth Arden, Inc.

  • "We see a tremendous advantage in running software and hardware from one vendor. With Oracle Business Intelligence 11g running on Oracle Exadata Database Machine, we have significantly improved our data warehouse performance, putting actionable information into the hands of the people who need it to make more effective business decisions.” – James Barlow, Director Global Business Intelligence, Elizabeth Arden, Inc.

  • Accelerate report generation to enable the finance department to complete the month-end close within three days
  • Reduce time for addressing problem queries and increase ability to perform business analytics innovatively to enable managers to make more effective decisions regarding cosmetics sales and marketing, supply chain planning, and budgeting
  • Drive performance gains for the 4-terabyte data warehouse without excessive storage costs as the user base and its needs continue to grow

Solutions

  • Implemented Oracle Exadata Database Machine with Oracle Business Intelligence 11g as the front end to a near-real-time data warehouse that supports 600 users across financial management, sales, supply chain planning, demand planning, and budgeting for the global cosmetics company
  • Accelerated report generation by 300% to 1,000% —shortening the month-end close process, putting financial data from Oracle’s JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Financials into the hands of decision-makers more quickly, and spurring increased data warehouse use
  • Built five new executive dashboards to enable senior-level executives to easily access the latest sales, revenue, and supply chain information they need to manage their teams and make more effective decisions without requiring IT support
  • Enabled the company to develop more targeted marketing programs by generating customer and brand-specific profit and loss statements utilizing Oracle Essbase cubes
  • Reduced the time that the business intelligence team spends addressing problem queries by a factor of six—enabling the team to spend more time addressing business needs and requests
  • Worked with Oracle Advanced Customer Support Services and Oracle Platinum Services to monitor and troubleshoot the Oracle Exadata platform—freeing up two full-time IT resources on the Elizabeth Arden team to focus on more strategic initiatives
  • Provided the scalability required to support the business without needing to regularly add new hardware

Why Oracle

“We’re an Oracle shop. When a transaction occurs in our JD Edwards EnterpriseOne system, we get immediate information into the data warehouse. We don’t need to wait for a batch upload. Having that real-time information at our fingertips was a clincher for us. Our ERP system, data warehouse, and hardware are tied together to support our business goals. In addition, our relationship with Oracle Advanced Customer Support Services and Oracle Platinum Services frees up our resources so we can focus on optimizing business intelligence instead of on system maintenance,” said James Barlow, director global business intelligence, Elizabeth Arden, Inc.

Implementation Process

Elizabeth Arden upgraded to Oracle Business Intelligence 11g and then installed Oracle Exadata Database Machine. The company built a new data warehouse on Oracle Exadata with Oracle Business Intelligence 11g as the front end and then merged user reports to the new system over a 10-month period. Elizabeth Arden moved all 600 users to the new data warehouse in one weekend.
