Ingersoll-Rand Makes Responses for Critical Back-Office Applications 41x Faster, Thanks to Engineered Systems

Ingersoll Rand is a global, diversified firm, providing products, services, and solutions to address the world’s critical need for clean and comfortable air, secure homes and buildings, safe and fresh food, energy efficiency, and sustainable business practices. Driven by a 100-year-old tradition of technological innovation, Ingersoll Rand enables its customers to initiate progress and have a positive impact in their world.

Ingersoll Rand’s family of brands―including Club Car, Ingersoll Rand, Schlage, Thermo King, and Trane―serve customers in global commercial, industrial, and residential markets.

A word from Ingersoll Rand

  • “We selected Oracle Exadata Database Machine and Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud to host our business critical Oracle E-Business Suite applications. With Oracle’s engineered systems, we have not only seen 41x faster average response times, but have also streamlined business processes and reduced overall maintenance costs, which is critical to Ingersoll Rand’s success.” – Barry Bonar, Enterprise Architect, Ingersoll Rand

  • Consolidate disparate manufacturing systems into one global enterprise resource planning (ERP) instance―including those used for hardware, software, applications, and processes―across the climate solutions, industrial technologies, security technologies, and residential solutions sectors
  • Move to one hardware platform to reduce complexity and maintenance costs
  • Standardize business practices across the Ingersoll Rand brand family
  • Increase decision-making speed and efficiency to better serve customers

  • Consolidated a vast array of manufacturing systems―including hardware, software, applications, and processes―across the climate solutions, industrial technologies, security technologies, and residential solutions sectors, using Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.1.3 running on two quarter racks of Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud, two half racks of Oracle Exadata Database Machine, and another quarter rack of Oracle Exadata
  • Optimized back-office, value-stream performance―the activities within a supply chain required to create a product—including order to cash, plan to manufacture, contract to maintain, procure to pay, and record to report―ultimately improving customer interactions
  • Improved application response times by 41x
  • Experienced Oracle E-Business Suite concurrent requests running as much as 300x faster using Oracle Exadata and Oracle Exalogic―accelerating the order-to-cash process to receive revenue more quickly
  • Implemented a common Oracle ERP solution to simplify and standardize business processes and drive operational excellence, positioning Ingersoll Rand to eliminate 900 legacy systems and reduce support costs by US$27 million
  • Consolidated all Oracle E-Business Suite modules onto one platform, decreasing system complexity and reducing maintenance costs, enabling Ingersoll-Rand to redirect funds to more innovative activities, such as bringing smarter products and services to market
  • Ensured consistent and easily retrievable data across the enterprise, increasing reporting capabilities and providing managers with greater visibility into operational, business, and product information, leading to faster and more accurate decision-making
  • Reduced business continuity risk for future projects with standardized architecture and processes
  • Eliminated highly customized legacy systems to improve data flow between systems and enable employees to make faster, smarter decisions and better serve customers
  • Eliminated time wasted on activities that aren’t value-added, such as data manipulation and searching for data across multiple systems, enabling employees to focus on daily job priorities and revenue-generating activities
  • Enabled simplified and smarter processes for employees across all sectors and regions―for example, enabling an industrial technologies inventory employee based in India to work from the same system as a climate solutions inventory employee in France
  • Implemented an InfiniBand connection between Oracle Exalogic and Oracle Exadata systems to connect data between numerous sources, resulting in performance gains
  • Used Oracle Fusion Middleware to accelerate system integrations
  • Reduced the number of people, as well as the skills required, to maintain and manage the platform

Why Oracle

“Ingersoll Rand has gone through many acquisitions and mergers, and as a result has a variety of hardware, software, applications, and processes. We didn’t need to evaluate all the different platform options available because we knew the performance benefits we obtained from Oracle systems, as well as the problems we faced with other vendors’ solutions. It was a natural progression that we evaluated and ultimately implemented Oracle Exadata and Oracle Exalogic. With 41x faster processing speeds, the benefits spoke for themselves,” said Barry Bonar, enterprise architect, Ingersoll Rand.

Ingersoll Rand worked with Oracle to complete a proof of value on the Oracle Exadata platform. The company shipped its entire data set to Oracle to run the designated performance tests on Oracle Exadata, enabling Ingersoll Rand to safely test its distinct workload to validate performance gains before investing in the engineered systems.

Implementation Process

“Oracle came onsite to install our Oracle engineered systems. Once complete, we had Oracle Exadata and Exalogic, with the InfiniBand connection between them, all our computer nodes, and every other piece up and running as we wanted. Working with one vendor from the hardware rack through to the software stack provided a tremendous benefit,” Bonar said.
