A word from Kabel Deutschland

  • “Scalability is a major factor for us due to the spectacular growth of batch and online jobs that we process—from data entries and updates to data retrievals. Oracle Exadata, which does not require additional floor space, cooling, and energy as compared to our legacy solution, is the best solution for us because the machine can easily scale to meet our growing performance and storage requirements.” – Steffen Ripke, Head of Business Intelligence Delivery, Kabel Deutschland

  • Lower the company’s CO2 footprint and reduce operational costs by replacing legacy hardware in production, integration, testing, and reporting platforms across numerous business units—from digital and analog television to internet and telephony
  • Deliver high-quality, high-performance business intelligence (BI) reporting faster to improve decision-makers’ ability to predict market trends and consumer behavior in the rapidly changing communications and home entertainment industry
  • Ensure business continuity as data volumes increase rapidly by deploying an easily scalable storage solution that fits KD’s production, integration, and backup requirements

  • Deployed Oracle Exadata Database Machine as KD’s integration platform—reducing energy consumption by 50% and floor space requirements by 33%, while adding 360% more storage capacity as compared to the 2012 legacy platform
  • Used Oracle Database Appliance as a geographically redundant infrastructure for production and backup environments, which allows KD to realize daily data loads of up to two terabytes and calculate key performance indicators on a daily rather than a biweekly basis
  • Enabled KD’s BI specialists to deliver key performance indicators—such as market penetration and margins per product line—eight hours faster than before, improving executive board reporting
  • Ensured ability to rapidly process huge volumes of the cable operator’s subscription, financial, and product information with Oracle Exadata
  • Substantially reduced the time required to generate reports from third-party applications, such as SAP Business Objects, to gain business insight—using Oracle Exadata engineered capabilities of bulk data handling
  • Increased KD’s computing capacity many times over by deploying two Oracle Exadata Half Rack units for production and integration purposes in different data centers to cope with the increasing need for on demand information in the media and entertainment industry
  • Deployed Oracle Database Appliance and Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance to keep pace with rapidly increasing data volumes, establish additional development and testing environments, and enable storage scalability on demand at low costs
  • Eliminated unscheduled downtime and gained the ability to use the integration rack for testing purposes and production backup

Why Oracle

“Our goal is to render better BI services by building a homogeneous environment that improves reporting while reducing energy consumption and cost of ownership. We chose Oracle technology because Oracle provides a complete product stack that meets our complex business needs—outstanding computing performance, fast reporting in a consolidated BI environment, scalability on demand, and no unscheduled downtime,” says Hannes Tuch, hardware specialist at KD.

Implementation Process

KD upgraded from Oracle Exadata Database Machine Quarter Rack to Half Rack and added another Oracle Exadata Database Machine Half Rack to enhance storage and business performance. Working with Oracle Advanced Customer Support Services professionals, KD’s BI specialists completed the deployment on time and on budget.
