Miami-Dade County Optimizes Software License Assets and Gains Transparency into Requirements with License Management Review

With nearly 2.5 million residents, Miami-Dade County is the most populous county in Florida and the seventh most populous county in the United States. Spanning nearly 2,000 miles, it is home to 35 incorporated cities, including Miami, and many unincorporated areas.

Miami-Dade County has a large Oracle footprint, which includes Oracle Database, Oracle SOA Suite, and Oracle WebLogic Server implementations. In 2011, Oracle License Management Services selected Miami-Dade County for a self-assessment that would document its use of Oracle products and solutions and ensure that it is licensed accurately. 

Due to the size of the county government and the number of departments covered by Oracle licenses, Miami-Dade was unable to validate its Oracle usage information without assistance from Oracle License Management Services. Its Oracle purchases over the span of a decade had resulted in a complex license inventory, which included many licenses with old product names and unclear metrics.

Oracle License Management Services performed a license review for each department and consolidated the information into a comprehensive report. The review was a collaborative effort between Oracle License Management Services and Miami-Dade County to ensure that respective licensing records matched, and that the county had a thorough understanding of the licenses it owned and what was required to ensure compliance.

Partnering with Oracle License Management Services enabled Miami-Dade County to better understand the status of its Oracle licenses through detailed explanations of metrics, minimum requirements, migration paths, and licensing policies. The license review process also helped the county to optimize use of its existing licenses, ensure compliance for current use, and have a clear picture of its assets as it evaluates future purchases.
