Refinaria Nacional de Sal Improves Quality Control by Standardizing Financial, Production, and Distribution Processes

Founded in 1949, Refinaria Nacional de Sal S/A manufactures Cisne and Clipper salt brands. The company is known for its investment in innovative technologies and its strict adherence to quality controls that ensure products with a high degree of purity, thanks to its own laboratory facilities for physicochemical and microbiological analyses.

Each month, Refinaria Nacional de Sal produces 20,000 tons of salt used in food products, hemodialysis solution, textiles, canned goods, paper, cosmetics, paints, pharmaceuticals, photographic film, dyes, adhesives, and explosives.

Challenges

A word from Refinaria Nacional de Sal S/A (Sal Cisne)

  • "Oracle’s JD Edwards EnterpriseOne 9.1 made it possible for us to standardize and integrate financial, production, and distribution processes. We can now ensure information security for critical operations, such as quality control, which is essential in supporting our industry-leadership position." – Guilherme B. Giorgi, Executive Director, Refinaria Nacional de Sal S/A

  • Replace a 20-year-old enterprise resource management (ERP) system to automate and integrate the salt refinery’s financial, production, and distribution processes
  • Increase data security by eliminating manual data entry
  • Automate salt-production quality control and consolidate analysis data, enabling the manufacturing department to gather information more quickly and accelerate the release of suitable salt lots from the company’s inventory
  • Provide quick and precise tax, financial, and commercial information to help managers monitor progress towards business goals

Solutions

  • Implemented Oracle’s JD Edwards EnterpriseOne 9.1 applications to replace a 20-year-old ERP legacy system, integrating financial, manufacturing, and distribution processes
  • Eliminated the complexity and risks associated with manual data entry by allowing nearly 200 internal users from the financial, distribution, and manufacturing departments to access all business data with a single tool
  • Accelerated and automated product delivery by eliminating using paper-based processes for the critical phase of quality control, during which the company tests and quarantines salt stock lots until they are deemed fit and ready for sale
  • Began to store laboratory-test records on each product batch in a single repository, improving traceability, which was previously completed through various spreadsheets
  • Accelerated financial-report generation with JD Edwards EnterpriseOne One View Reporting for Financials, putting performance data by product lines, region and type of customer into the hands of decision-makers more quickly to enable them to monitor sales and financial progress in relation to business goals
  • Adopted Oracle User Productivity Kit Standard as an e-learning tool, facilitating sharing information between the company’s three units—two in São Paulo and one in Rio de Janeiro—through knowledge transfer and delivering training content to approximately 200 internal users, accelerating JD Edwards EnterpriseOne’s adoption

Why Oracle

“After evaluating several products, we selected Oracle’s JD Edwards EnterpriseOne because it was the most complete, robust solution that could meet our needs without requiring us to sacrifice the great deal of flexibility we need to make necessary operations adjustments. The reliability of Oracle technology also led us to incorporate Oracle Database, Enterprise Edition, Oracle Linux, and Oracle Enterprise Manager," said Guilherme B. Giorgi, executive director, Refinaria Nacional de Sal S/A.

Implementation Process

Refinaria Nacional de Sal completed the implementation of JD Edwards EnterpriseOne within 12 months.

"We created a parallel environment during the migration phase, facilitating a smooth transition. In the user-training stage, we used Oracle User Productivity Kit Standard, which was integrated into our intranet, providing access to training materials at all times," said Giorgi.
