Robur S.p.A. Consolidates IT Architecture and Reduces Energy Consumption by 40% through New Servers and a Virtual Desktop Environment

Robur S.P.A, has developed and manufactured high-efficiency, low-environmental-impact heating systems for more than 50 years. Its advanced solutions warm buildings by maximizing energy resources and integrating efficiency, economy, and ecology. Robur’s heating systems—thanks to the use of renewable energy—increase energy efficiency by more than 170% while reducing energy consumption and emission of pollutants by 50%.

Recently the company has established solid business relationships with both European and extra-European countries. Due to consolidation in the Italian market and its rapid international expansion, Robur needed to update its IT infrastructure to ensure it could continue to offer advanced energy products as well as efficient and qualified services to an expanding list of global customers.

Robur worked with Oracle Partner SORINT.lab srl to implement Oracle’s Sun Fire servers and a StorageTek array running on Oracle Solaris. With the implementation, Robur consolidated its IT environment, enhanced security, and reduced costs. By implementing a new, online portal using Java Desktop System, Robur employees were able to communicate with suppliers and clients from any location, enabling more efficient communication and enhancing operational efficiency. The virtual desktop environment also reduced electricity consumption and carbon dioxide production by 40%.

Solutions

  • Worked with Oracle Partner SORINT.lab srl to consolidate its hardware infrastructure with Oracle’s Sun Fire servers and a StorageTek array—realizing a three-fold increase in IT efficiency
  • Enhanced business continuity and efficiency in all operations, such as reducing processing time from 40 minutes to under 1 minute
  • Leveraged Oracle Solaris to increase hardware reliability, scalability, and a future upgrade path
  • Used Java Desktop System to virtualize the desktop for 80% of the sales force, which reduced approximately 40% of the company’s electricity consumption and carbon dioxide production
  • Reduced waste, complexity, and operating costs during maintenance and updates of traditional desktop environments while enabling users to access their virtual desktops from any location
  • Replaced an old client-server system—which was based on expensive, obsolete, legacy software and localized, remote desktops—with a portal that centralizes redundant operations, particularly concerning maintenance and support
  • Eliminated potential security vulnerabilities by centralizing IT management, data, and applications while maintaining privacy and complying with security standards
  • Improved communication, messaging, and portal management with the entire supplier chain and technical support centers to enable managing more than 100,000 system accesses per year, with peaks of 1,000 connections per day
  • Reduced administration time related to loading processes, storage, material acceptance, quantity control, and verification by 50%, using online services
  • Integrated Oracle Sun Storage with Robur’s CRM system to improve sales activity by using an online product configurator that is directly available to the sales force—enabling the formulation of better offers to customers

Why Oracle

The goal of the project was to acquire efficiency, security, modern equipment, and interoperability. Oracle met Robur’s needs, thanks to complete coverage of all requirements, from storage, to the Oracle Solaris operating system, communication management, and virtualization.

Implementation Process

Robur used three interrelated levels of implementation, which corresponded to the enterprise’s business strategy—including server consolidation, desktop virtualization, and enterprise resource planning functionality via the internet.
