Challenges

A word from Rogers Communications

  • “With Oracle’s Sun ZFS Storage Appliance, we’ve created a highly available and scalable storage environment for our growing content-on-demand service. The robust set of data services available with the systems and not having to spend more money to license them separately, made economic sense and simplified our installation. As important, we’ve been able to use the robust environment to support revenue streams, such as providing content to other cable networks and creating an online store for premium, paid digital entertainment.” – Christine McKinlay, Manager, Video Applications and Application Platforms, Rogers Communications Inc.

  • Create a highly available and reliable storage system to power the company’s new Rogers On Demand Online (RODO) content service—a value add in a competitive cable market
  • Create a highly scalable storage environment that enables Rogers to continue to add high volumes of digital content for distribution through RODO and to other cable systems
  • Create a storage environment that could support multiple initiatives, including onboarding content directly from studios and contracting content delivery to other cable networks for new revenue streams

Oracle Product and Services

  • Used Oracle’s Sun storage systems, including Sun Storage 6580 arrays and multiple Sun ZFS Storage Appliances, each with over 100TB of capacity to create a highly scalable and reliable environment for RODO, enabling the company to provide added value in a competitive communications market
  • Extended use of the storage environment beyond RODO to download content for Rogers outlets directly from studios or distributors, reducing the content onboard process by 97%
  • Ensured that Rogers meets its service level agreements with other cable operators to which it provides content, such as the need to make content from the World Cup and 2010 Winter Olympics available to partners in 24 hours
  • Made available 877 hours of Winter Olympics content in high definition in just 18 days to Rogers’ customer base as well as five additional Canadian cable operators
  • Enabled Rogers to efficiently store 116 terabytes of content with the ability to quickly add additional capacity
  • Implemented the remote data replication feature of the Sun ZFS Storage Appliance to keep two copies of data in different locations for disaster recovery
