Challenges

A word from Saipem S.p.A

  • "Oracle’s AutoVue has been an effective, well-known document visualization system for many years. Following the recent addition of 3-D model viewing and presentation of data and information from other corporate systems in graphic reports, the results are even more attractive." – Ulisse Beretta, Business Applications Manager, Saipem S.p.A

  • Adopt a complex CAD document viewing system to enable high quality reading of 2-D and 3-D drawings to support oil and gas engineering and construction work
  • Standardize various document viewing and conveying environments with a single collaborative platform that can integrate with the company’s legacy document management application
  • Ensure availability of projects information in a shared environment available for all the companies in the group
  • Facilitate project monitoring, progress assessment, and approval cycles for clients in the energy industry
  • Authorize document viewing for different users with different needs, such as designers, technicians, and project managers for both onshore and offshore energy projects

Solutions

Oracle Product and Services

  • Implemented Oracle’s AutoVue 3-D Professional Advanced to permit accurate viewing of all projects in 2-D and 3-D formats
  • Integrated AutoVue with the existing centralized document management system
  • Deployed Web-based tools of AutoVue to permit faster, more open teamwork and document sharing for onshore and offshore oil and gas projects
  • Enabled project managers, office heads, and engineering managers to control, edit, and approve project documents and other materials entered by technicians, draftsmen, and engineers into AutoVue, hence simplifying and speeding up all bureaucratic aspects
  • Permitted sharing of complex computer-aided design (CAD) information with users who do not have the CAD editing environment installed, allowing for simpler IT management across the oil and gas organization

Why Oracle

In 2006, the company adopted a document management solution focusing on engineering and project management. The solution automatically converted CAD documents and drawings into a PDF format for viewing. The quality of the PDF files was low, however, making documents hard to read and unusable for engineering work. Saipem decided to rethink its document visualization policy and implemented Oracle's AutoVue 3-D Professional Advanced. Today, it can effectively share and manage two-dimensional (2-D) and three-dimensional (3-D) documents CAD, as well as other documents with project managers, engineers, and other team members, improving capital project design and execution and overall productivity.

“We assessed a number of document viewing applications, some of which could be integrated with our document management system. AutoVue 3-D Professional Advanced’s robust functionality and positive references tipped our evaluation strongly in Oracle’s favor. We had no doubt that it was the right choice,” said Ulisse Beretta, business applications manager, Saipem S.p.A

Implementation Process

“With Oracle’s help, it took only four months to implement AutoVue. Moving forward, we are also planning to install AutoVue clients on mobile devices to allow our work sites and construction projects to view documents without a network connection.” said Ulisse Beretta, business applications manager, Saipem S.p.A
