Challenges

A word from Santos Ltd.

  • "We chose an end-to-end Oracle hardware and software solution to maximize our IT investment and help support our long-term growth strategy. We have optimized data processing and improved our operational efficiency to meet regulatory compliance and better support our oil-and gas business activities.” – Hugh Banister, CIO, Santos Ltd.

  • Provide a high-performance, highly available, and scalable database platform to support 24/7 global operations and expansion in Asia and gain analytic capability for an increasingly complex oil-and-gas production infrastructure
  • Reduce costs and improve ability to manage growing amounts of spatial data—including seismic surveys and reservoir models—as well as engineering data and financial records
  • Improve operational efficiency for oil-and-gas production allocation process, including tracking and calculating hydrocarbon products, forecasting expenditures, and managing budgeting and compliance reporting with 17 joint-venture partners
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory reporting deadlines and expand business insight to support oil-and-gas business activities

Solutions

  • Improved operating efficiency by processing massive production allocation data 12x faster—in 10 hours instead of 120 hours—with Oracle Exadata, meeting regulatory reporting deadlines, such as sending quarterly preliminary production results to the Australian Stock Exchange
  • Achieved 52x spatial data compression by using the Oracle Exadata Hybrid Columnar Compression feature, increasing storage capacity to support the growth strategy for Asia’s LNG market and reducing long-term storage costs
  • Increased invoice accuracy and speed by completing queries 7x faster, thanks to Oracle Exadata Smart Scan, minimizing delays and strengthening cash flow
  • Reduced data-center costs by using an integrated engineered system that minimized floor-space needs, and cut power costs and cooling requirements
  • Improved reporting efficiency and enabled better quality control of production results to meet regulatory compliance standards
  • Simplified system management and support by using a single, preconfigured engineered system, increasing staff productivity
  • Reduced implementation risks and costs by deploying an out-of-the-box solution and enabling fast deployment
  • Increased management’s responsiveness to oil-and-gas industry issues, such as exploration risks and market trends for crude oil prices, thanks to Oracle Exalytics In-Memory Machine’s rich visualization capabilities and self-service analytics
  • Provided real-time data analysis by integrating Oracle Exalytics In-Memory Machine seamlessly with Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12 applications and Oracle Hyperion solutions to achieve superior performance for business intelligence, supporting better oil-and-gas production decisions
  • Reduced operational costs and risks by using fully tested and optimized Oracle hardware and software
  • Improved data integrity and visibility by implementing a consolidated enterprise resource planning system across all business units, thanks to Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12 on Oracle’s SPARC servers, running Oracle Solaris, including the new implementation for SPARC T5, ensuring system uptime and reducing operating costs

Why Oracle

Santos chose Oracle Exadata for its integrated hardware and software platform and out-of-the-box solution. It enables rapid deployment, lowers implementation risks, and is well-suited for 24/7, global, oil-and-gas business operations.

"Oracle offers a preconfigured and optimized hardware and software solution with single-vendor support. It just makes sense from an implementation and ongoing-support perspective. We have improved our hardware and software performance and reduced our operational costs and risks through increased reporting efficiency, enabling us to maximize our IT investment,” said Hugh Banister, CIO, information systems, Santos Ltd.

Implementation Process

Santos conducted a proof of concept for Oracle Exadata, which demonstrated the solution’s superior performance over competitors. Santos internal IT team worked with Oracle Advanced Customer Support Services for testing and installation. The new system went live in just six months. Santos then implemented Oracle Exalytics In-Memory Machine in April 2013.

“It was the first implementation of its kind in an Australian oil-and-gas production environment. The level of visibility from Oracle was exceptional. Oracle pulled out all the stops, and we completed the implementation much faster than expected,” Banister said.
