Shanghai Workers Mutual Association was established by the Shanghai Federation of Trade Unions under the instruction of the National Federation of Trade Unions and in accordance with the Chinese Government’s guidelines to improve the country’s social security system. Its formation was approved by the Shanghai Bureau of Civil Service in in December 1994. Today, the organization offers a variety of medical insurance programs, such as Special Mutual Group Health Coverage Programs for Female Employees, to more than 7 million members and has paid US$704 million in reimbursements.

Shanghai Workers Mutual Association administers medical insurance programs and related tasks for more than 60% of employed workers and 99% of retired workers.

Why Oracle

Shanghai Workers Mutual Association considered a number of vendors’ products before choosing Oracle.

“Our infrastructure comprised multiple business systems and large quantities of data,” said Li Jiehua, director, Computer Center, Shanghai Workers Mutual Association. “After comparing and testing multiple brands, we found that Oracle’s SPARC Enterprise M8000 server delivered the powerful data processing and analysis capabilities we were after.

“The Pillar Axiom 600 storage system provided optimized application-aware I/O performance, dynamic application and data configuration, and a simple control console, meeting our requirements for real-time data processing,” he added.

“With regard to system stability and reliability, the redundancy features of the Oracle server and storage system fulfilled our needs for a highly available database platform,” said Li.

Implementation Process

Shanghai Workers Mutual Association engaged Oracle Specialized Partner Beijing Teamsun Technology to implement the Oracle server and storage infrastructure. The platform comprised two SPARC Enterprise M8000 servers with eight 3.0GHz SPARC 64 VII+ processors, 64GB of memory, and a Pillar Axiom 600 storage system with 600GB of optical fiber, hard disk.

Data migration and application testing for the new infrastructure was completed in July 2012, and the Oracle solution went live in the same month.

Partner

Beijing Teamsun Technology implemented the Oracle equipment, installed and debugged software, tested software applications, and provided maintenance services and other resources.
