SITA is a world-leading specialist in air transport communications and information technology. The company innovates, develops, and manages business solutions over its extensive network that forms the communication backbone of the global air transport industry.

SITA implemented four SPARC T4-1 servers to ensure continued reliability and enhance performance for BagMessage, its global message distribution solution that 530 airlines use to communicate with automated baggage systems that route luggage from check-in to final destination and passenger collection. The company has doubled its system capacity, accommodated a 20%, year-on-year growth in message traffic in Europe, and built a scalable platform to support the continued expansion of BagMessage.

Challenges

A word from SITA

  • "SPARC T4-1 servers give us the biggest bang for our buck in terms of processing power, performance, price, and investment protection." – Nick Gates, Baggage Portfolio Director, SITA

  • Provide unbeatable reliability and uptime for BagMessage, a global message distribution solution that 530 airlines use to automate the routing of luggage from check-in to final destination and passenger collection
  • Continue to deliver market-beating speeds for the 1.3 billion messages exchanged annually between BagMessage, airline departure control systems, and baggage handling and reconciliation systems at 230 airports
  • Scale BagMessage to accommodate a 20%, year-on-year growth in message traffic in Europe without degrading performance―as impaired performance could impact customer service quality and increase the risk of misdirected bags

Solutions

Oracle Product and Services

  • Doubled capacity of BagMessage by adding four SPARC T4-1 servers to the existing SPARC Enterprise M3000 server environment

  • Increased server utilization and reduced the need for additional servers to manage future growth in message traffic, thanks to SPARC T4-1 servers’ scalability and efficiency
  • Minimized data center operating costs with SPARC T4 servers’ low-power consumption and small footprint
  • Continued to benefit from enterprise-grade performance, manageability, and security of Oracle Solaris

Why Oracle

SITA operated BagMessage on Sun servers for more than 10 years and wanted to protect its investment in Oracle hardware while increasing performance and scalability to meet demand.

"Oracle’s SPARC T4-1 servers exceeded our expectations during performance tests and the binary compatibility of the applications allowed us to confidently provision our hardware to the existing workload for 4x the transaction capacity and to achieve a higher level of transaction performance,” said Nick Gates, baggage portfolio director, SITA. "It will support the 20%, year-on-year growth of BagMessage, while enabling us to deliver the service quality that makes it the preferred solution for airlines and airports."
