Telenet Centralizes Identity and Access Management, Saves Significantly on Software Costs, Improves Security

Telenet, founded in 1996, began as a European broadband services pioneer. Today, the company is a market leader in Belgium for residential high-speed internet, telephony, and digital television services. It serves 1.24 million digital television subscribers, 1.22 million internet customers, and 815,000 fixed telephony accounts. Telenet Solutions, the company’s business market division, offers a complete communications solutions portfolio for organizations and corporations, holding a commanding lead in the Belgian/Luxembourg business market.

Telenet wanted to introduce a new identity and access management solution to replace its custom-built and difficult-to-maintain legacy solution. Telenet selected Oracle Identity Management to improve security, gain insight into applications usage for customer relationship management, billing, enterprise resource planning, and more, and to accelerate the internal approval process for accessing certain business applications.

Challenges

A word from Telenet

  • "Thanks to Oracle Identity Management we have more transparent insight into how users use our business applications, which has helped us realize significant cost savings on software licenses." – Mark Van Tiggel, Domain Architect ERP & Corporate Applications, Telenet

  • Implement a new identity and access management solution to replace its existing, 15-year-old, custom-built solution that could not safely and easily manage access rights for Telenet’s 2,000 employees and business-application consultant community
  • Increase security and manage more proficiently the access rights to certain business-critical applications and applications containing strategically important customer data, such as communications services usage statistics, financial information
  • Improve and accelerate the lengthy internal request process to gain approval for accessing certain applications, such as customer relationship management, enterprise resource planning, and financial applications by providing the option of e-mail approval
  • Use identity management analytics to further optimize access and license management with transparent insight into how different company employees use business applications

Solutions

Oracle Product and Services

  • Implemented Oracle Identity Management as a replacement for its legacy, custom-built application, allowing for a more transparent and integrated approach to identity management, using the new solution’s analytics capabilities
  • Centralized access management to all business applications containing strategically important customer data, such as communications services usage statistics and financial information, by using Oracle Identity Management to improve security and eliminate the need for several people to manage access, allowing quicker access-right updates for certain user accounts, for example for people leaving the company
  • Enabled self-service provisioning for certain noncritical applications, such as customer relationship management, and allowed about 3,800 users to follow approvals for their access requests at all times―greatly improving the approval process
  • Provided a more transparent business application usage overview, uncovering several underused or abandoned user accounts, allowing Telenet to reduce the number of licenses that are necessary and realize significant cost savings
