Turkcell İletişim Hizmetleri Backs-up 10x Faster, Reduces Costs and Risks, and Increases Storage Space by 10x

Turkcell İletişim Hizmetleri A.Ş. (Turkcell) is a leading mobile communications provider in Turkey, with more than 34 million subscribers. Established in 1994, Turkcell created the first global system for a mobile communications network in Turkey, and it was the first Turkish company to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange.

Challenges

A word from Turkcell İletişim Hizmetleri A.Ş.

  • “With tape technologies, we faced lengthy backup and restore procedures, and our administrative efforts and costs grew as fast as our data volumes. We had a bottleneck behind our three Oracle Exadata full racks with six high-performance databases, so we decided to deploy the industry-leading network-attached storage, Oracle’s Sun ZFS Storage Appliance. The result was, on average, a tenfold reduction in storage space, a tenfold reduction in backup time, and enhanced overall database performance.” – Orhan Karaman, Database Administrator, Turkcell İletişim Hizmetleri A.Ş.

  • Achieve faster backup of six Oracle databases stored on three Oracle Exadata Database Machine Full Racks, because a procedure requiring 40 hours to record consecutive backups to tapes compromised business continuity in the event of a disaster
  • Provide the company’s developers with rapid access to live telecommunication data to test new products and services and accelerate releases
  • Mitigate the risk of service interruption by increasing speed for restoring databases—which took between three and four days, twice as long as for backup
  • Reduce administrative efforts and storage footprint—a key requirement in the telecommunications sector where data volumes double annually

Solutions

Oracle Product and Services

  • Deployed Sun ZFS Storage 7420 appliance with 840 terabytes of raw capacity as the company’s primary Oracle Database, backup, and development environment enabling fast parallel backups with scalable, efficient network attached storage (NAS) without any modification to the company’s databases
  • Reduced, by tenfold, the time required to back up 60 terabytes of telecommunication data from Oracle Exadata, multirack environments—from 40 hours down to 4 to 5 hours—to ensure business continuity
  • Mitigated business risk by enabling the company to restore backup databases within a few hours
  • Gained the ability to deploy preproduction environments on Sun ZFS Storage Appliance in combination with real-time production data without interacting with the production database—which enabled the organization to develop new telecommunication products and services faster
  • Migrated 100 terabytes of telecommunication data from legacy storage area network (SAN) boxes, such as EMC, Hitachi, and IBM, to Sun ZFS Storage 7420 appliance, leveraging Oracle’s premier NAS storage to ensure industry-leading storage performance, reliability, and cost of ownership
  • Realized a tenfold reduction in storage space with Oracle Database Hybrid Columnar Compression technology for Sun ZFS Storage Appliance, which substantially reduced storage and energy costs
  • Achieved the highest possible protection against downtime by running Sun ZFS Storage 7420 on a two-node cluster configuration with active-active architecture, which excludes single points of failure
  • Achieved an overall increase in database performance by solving performance issues proactively with DTrace Analytics and Oracle Fault Management Architecture—exclusive features of Sun ZFS Storage Appliance

Why Oracle

“Oracle did not compete with other vendors here. We knew beforehand that only Oracle technology could deliver the desired benefits, such as cutting storage space significantly with Hybrid Columnar Compression or running preproduction environments with live data. We also opted for Sun ZFS Storage because it offers much better integration with Oracle Exadata than a third-party storage solution,” said Orhan Karaman, database administrator, Turkcell İletişim Hizmetleri A.Ş.

Implementation Process

“The implementation took about two months. The local Oracle team helped us to prepare three different storage pools that cover the main database and two backup systems. The result was a seamless deployment in time and on budget,” Karaman added.
