Vodafone Romania is a wholly owned subsidiary of Vodafone Group plc, the world’s largest mobile communications provider, and it is the seventh-largest Vodafone subsidiary in the world by number of subscribers. Vodafone was the first telecommunications company to launch a global system for mobile communications network in Romania in 1997, and the first operator to offer third-generation (3G) cell-phone technology services in 2005, followed by a network upgrade to 3G broadband–high speed data packet access. In October 2012, Vodafone was also the first company to offer fourth-generation cell-phone technology (4G) mobile data to Romanian subscribers.

Why Oracle

While forced by system performance to bring a positive change to the data warehouse platform, Vodafone’s time and budget restrictions were low and inflexible. Vodafone’s technical delivery team analyzed solutions from multiple vendors, but most projects would have led to major transformational changes in database structure as well as time-consuming and expensive team efforts for the migration. Oracle Exadata was the only solution that was capable of offering a quick drag-and-drop migration while dramatically increasing warehouse performance and data compression.

Implementation Process

The first phase was a proof of concept in which Vodafone compared Oracle Exadata against specific acceptance criteria. Oracle Consulting reviewed possible migration paths from the existing system and environment to the Oracle Exadata environment, defined platform migration strategy and testing plans, migrated six terabytes of relevant data to the Oracle Exadata Database Machine, and performed technical data validation.

Vodafone took three weeks to test the solution against business scenarios, and the results were outstanding: 12x faster operational data processing, 10x faster business intelligence reporting, and 3x faster data consolidation. The results positioned the Oracle solution above expectations, and the migration was quick and seamless.

Oracle had 100% ownership and responsibility in the implementation, with Oracle Advanced Customer Support Services managing installation, configuration, and production support readiness. The organization later performed the quarterly patch deployment without any business interruption. The project was delivered on time and within budget.
