All the Technologies Needed to Quickly Deploy an OpenStack Cloud
By Margaret Harrist
Find out how Oracle Solaris 11.2 exemplifies Oracle's focus on innovation and integration.
The expectations for an enterprise-class operating system are greater than ever. Security, virtualization, software-defined networking, and manageability have all grown in importance. And, for many organizations, cloud computing has become a must-have capability.
The new Oracle Solaris 11.2 is designed to meet these requirements. Oracle Solaris 11.2 melds all of these capabilities, and much more, into the industry's most robust, full-featured cloud platform. It does that with an unprecedented level of integration that simplifies and accelerates IT service delivery. Cloud computing has just gotten easier.
How does Oracle Solaris 11.2 do it? One of its big innovations is a fully integrated distribution of OpenStack, a collection of open software components for cloud computing. This tight integration enables IT teams to have a compute cloud up and running in less than an hour. Without Oracle Solaris 11.2, that hands-on work can take a week or longer.
Take a deeper dive into all that Oracle Solaris 11.2 offers.
It's just one way that Oracle Solaris 11.2 helps reduce the cost and complexity of cloud deployments across an enterprise. As such, it's a way for chief information officers to create a more agile IT environment, one where more resources are freed up for business innovation and customer value.
Oracle Solaris 11.2's other enterprise capabilities include a hypervisor for virtualization, software-defined networking, management tools, and provisioning—all combined with the proven track record of Oracle Solaris. This new release is further evidence of Oracle's continued investment in innovative systems technologies to meet customers' needs, which has resulted in a growing enterprise systems business for Oracle as other vendors' systems sales decline.
With Oracle Solaris 11.2, Oracle eliminates the need to buy these various technologies separately from other vendors, which can result in integration and management complexity and associated costs.
For improved economies of scale with enterprise clouds, Oracle Solaris 11.2 extends the virtualization capabilities of Oracle Solaris to include a fully integrated hypervisor. While solutions from some virtualization vendors impose a performance “tax” of up to 30 percent, the overhead of the Oracle Solaris 11.2 hypervisor is less than one percent—enabling more optimized system usage and lower hardware and software licensing costs. Compared to some other cloud infrastructure solutions, the virtualization capabilities built into Oracle Solaris 11.2 can save businesses $500 or more for each virtual machine deployed. In a cloud environment with thousands of systems, that could translate into millions of dollars in savings.
Oracle Solaris 11.2 also makes cloud system management more efficient via the secure automation of software patches and updates. Automating these processes enables a 16-fold gain in efficiency and a 6x lower cost of management compared with competitive solutions.
An OpenStack cloud based on Oracle Solaris 11.2 can interoperate with and manage OpenStack components from other vendors. That means enterprises that already have an OpenStack distribution can deploy Oracle Solaris 11.2 alongside those other systems and the operating system will fit in seamlessly.
Oracle is a member of the OpenStack Foundation and is committed to providing the OpenStack community with all changes made to enable the Oracle Solaris 11.2 OpenStack distribution. In addition, Oracle is actively working with the OpenStack community to ensure that enterprise software can be deployed on an OpenStack cloud.
The OpenStack distribution included with Oracle Solaris 11.2 does not change the core functionality of the operating system, but adds a new way to access that functionality. It has gone through the same rigorous testing as the Oracle Solaris operating system, ensuring the same high quality that Oracle Solaris delivers.
