Btrfs
The Btrfs file system is designed to address the expanding scalability requirements of large storage subsystems, common in today's data centers. Btrfs delivers features missing from Linux today, such as enhanced scalability and simplified management for large storage configurations, and flexible snapshotting and fast incremental backups of the data and metadata in the file system. Btrfs also maintains multiple copies of crucial file system structures.

Q: Why is Btrfs innovative?

A: Btrfs adds features that Linux users have been requesting for some time, and it allows us to expand our use of Linux in new and interesting ways.

Q: What makes it unique?

A: Linux is already a very flexible and powerful environment, and Btrfs brings a rich set of storage management tools. By building an advanced storage stack on top of Linux, we are enabling our customers to run all of their critical services under the same base operating system. Btrfs is being built in cooperation with a number of partners, allowing us to build it faster and with contributions from file system experts around the world.

Q: Why would you say you were nominated for the Oracle Innovation Showcase?

A: The Btrfs file system targets features that administrators need most. Btrfs started as a personal project of mine, but the more I worked on it, the more I became convinced it was a good way to solve some real problems we're facing today. I had a unique opportunity to take a detailed look at the features missing from Linux, and felt that Btrfs was the best way to solve them. Today, it fits into Oracle's general strategy of improving Linux over the long term.

Q: Why do you think innovation is important?

A: Software and hardware are always changing, and innovation is a crucial part of making sure that we are helping to shape the hardware and software deployed in the future.

Q: How do you think Oracle's innovative culture benefits our customers?

A: Oracle has the resources and the will to tackle difficult problems, and we are able to make hardware and software that meet customer needs. Our innovations allow the customer to do more with less, and to do things that have been impossible in the past.

Q: What innovative technology are you excited about right now?

A: Solid-state storage, a nonvolatile storage medium that employs integrated circuits rather than magnetic or optical media. Even though there has been a great deal of hype around solid-state storage, the reality is that it will change how storage is used and how applications are designed.
