Q: Why is Oracle Business Intelligence Suite Enterprise Edition Plus [Oracle BI EE Plus] innovative?
A: Oracle BI EE Plus has a wealth of capabilities. Companies rely on analytics to make decisions. They need to know, for example, which sales region is more likely to perform better in the next quarter. Oracle BI EE Plus gives customers the insight and proactive intelligence that can make a difference. And it does it in an innovative way: through dashboards, alerts, and other methods that are custom-designed to deliver the right information, at the right time, to the right audience. But the key is that the information provided is relevant—customers can immediately use it to take action.
Q: What's innovative about the project you're working on now?
A: I led the team that created a series of analytic dashboards for Oracle BI EE Plus. It was really a breakthrough in terms of applying Oracle database technology to creating these dashboards. It utilized the flexibility of Oracle BI EE, leveraging the powerful statistical functions from the Oracle database. By combining these two Oracle technologies, the dashboards I created give businesses more actionable, predictable information. The work I did also crossed product lines and organizations at Oracle because the analytic insight provided by dashboard technology can be used in many different areas in order to identify opportunities.
Q: How do you define innovation?
A: Innovation is really the capability of finding solutions that haven't been thought of before. In information technology, that means applying technology in new ways that haven't been applied before.
Q: How do you think that Oracle's innovative culture benefits customers?
A: I think there's no limitation for innovation at Oracle. We're not bound by technological limitations. I think Oracle's culture provides the platform so that the customer's imagination is their only limitation.
Q: What would you say is the enemy of innovation?
A: A problem well stated is a problem half-solved. I think one of the biggest enemies of innovation is the inability to comprehend the problem that needs to be solved.
Q: Who would you say is the most innovative person at Oracle?
A: I have to tip my hat to Larry Ellison. His vision of providing one place for the customers to find every business solution that they might need showed tremendous farsightedness.
Q: What innovative technology are you the most excited about now?
A: I'd say Oracle BI EE Plus because I really think that Oracle has the best solution in the market, far and away superior to anything else out there. I'm very excited about this product. I also think Oracle Fusion Middleware 11g is an exciting innovation from Oracle. The goal is to maximize the efficiency in both IT and business processes to give the customer the agility to adapt and innovate.
Q: What's the most innovative product—not Oracle's—that you know of?
A: The iPhone. The design and thinking that went into that product is amazing. It gives you the flexibility to get out of your office and stay connected. Wherever you are, you can easily check email, look at documents, search the Web, or just listen to music. Most importantly, it allows others to develop and sell a variety of apps in the Apps store, giving the iPhone a huge repertory of applications.
