Oracle Database 11g Achieves World Record on Sun SPARC Solaris

A new world-record TPC-C benchmark reveals that Oracle Database 11g on Sun hardware runs faster than IBM DB2 on IBM’s flagship Power 595. Two more benchmarks on Sun Blade Module and Fujitsu Server Cluster confirm the superiority of Oracle Database in terms of both performance and scalability.

“Oracle continues to prove that it is far ahead of the competition when it comes to meeting the high-performance, data-intensive computing demands of our customers,” says Juan Loaiza, senior vice president, Oracle systems technology.

Faster than IBM: Oracle and Sun SPARC Solaris
The TPC-C benchmark found that Oracle Database 11g running on Sun SPARC servers with CMT technology and the Sun Solaris operating system runs faster than IBM DB2 running on IBM’s flagship Power 595.

Besides superior performance, the Oracle-Sun configuration consumed four times less energy than the IBM configuration.

Oracle and Sun have also become the first vendors to achieve world-record TPC-C performance results using Flash storage technology.

Oracle Database/Fujitsu Server Cluster/SAP BI Data Mart
Oracle Database also achieved world-record results on the SAP Business Intelligence-Data Mart (BI-D) Standard Application Benchmark, surpassing the best IBM DB2 result on this benchmark with more than triple the performance.

On a system composed of a two-node Fujitsu PRIMERGY RX300 cluster, each equipped with a two-socket, quad-core Intel Xeon x5570 2.93 GHz processor, Oracle Database and Oracle Real Application Clusters on Linux delivered a world-record 609,349 query navigation steps per hour.

Oracle on Sun Blade Module: Near-Linear Scalability
Oracle Database on Sun’s Intel-based Blade Module set a world record on SAP Sales and Distribution-Parallel Standard Application Benchmark with the SAP Enhancement Package 4 for SAP ERP 6.0 (Unicode) (4).

Running the Solaris 10 operating system on a cluster of four-node Sun Blade X6270 server module nodes, each with two Intel Xeon x5570 quad-core 2.93 GHz processors, Oracle Database and Oracle Real Application Clusters achieved 13,718 SAP SD-Parallel Benchmark users, outperforming by 66 percent the previous best eight processor two-tier SAP SD Standard Application Benchmark result with the SAP enhancement package 4 for SAP ERP (Unicode) held by Microsoft SQL Server (5).

“This benchmark demonstrates once again that Real Application Clusters scales performance for real-world complex business applications,” said Loaiza. “Together, Oracle and Sun are a winning combination.”
