How Green Is Your Production Line?

The prototype of a unique energy monitoring solution for manufacturers—unveiled last month at Oracle’s OpenWorld conference—uses a new data repository created by Oracle and special sensors to collect detailed shop-floor information.

The solution is the result of collaboration between Oracle, which is supplying a special energy-oriented version of the Oracle Manufacturing Operations Center data hub, and OMRON, a leading Japanese maker of industrial sensors and control equipment. OMRON sensors feed energy and greenhouse-gas emissions data into servers connected to the Manufacturing Operations Center, which consolidates the information and sends it to ERP systems for compliance reporting.

Yet to be officially named, the energy-monitoring solution is unique because it collects a very fine level of detail to help manufacturers analyze energy consumption in their production processes and supply chain activities, says Amit K. Singh, Oracle director of product strategy.

“Manufacturers see not just the total amount of energy their facilities use each month, they also know energy consumption rates for individual pieces of production equipment,” he says. “It’s the latest tool that promotes good environmental practices and uncovers cost-saving opportunities.”

The Oracle Manufacturing Operations Center also continues to perform its traditional duties of collecting manufacturing-line data about production rates, downtime, and the quality of finished goods.

Singh adds that the energy monitoring solution is designed to work beyond the shop floor. Companies will also be able to use it to monitor energy performance in corporate offices, R&D centers, sales centers, and other facilities.

The release of a commercial version is planned for sometime in 2010.
